5G Network Rollout Will Offer Amazing Applications (and Profit Opportunities!)

You've probably heard about 5G, the fifth-generation wireless network that all of us will come to depend on before long.

The hype around 5G is all about its speed. I'm talking a super, super, super fast type of speed.

Skeptics are focused on smartphones. But 5G is bigger and much more important.

At its best, 4G transfers an impressive 100 megabits (Mbps) of data per second. But 5G will hit 10 gigabits per second (Gbps), which means 5G is 100 times faster than 4G technology.

100 times!

For perspective, you will be able to download a two-hour movie in less than 4 seconds on 5G. Compare that to six minutes on 4G, or 26 hours on 3G.

Even more important than speed is the dramatic decrease in latency. Latency refers to the delay between the time you hit the send button and the time the image/data/video shows up on your screen.

With 5G, the latency will shrink to almost zero.

The impact this will have is almost impossible to understate. And it its right around the corner, not years in the future.

Take a look at the new $500 million Golden1Center in Sacramento. Golden1 is home to the Sacramento Kings. But it is legendary for more reasons than housing a National Basketball Association team.

Golden1 is the most technologically advanced sports stadium in the world.

Notice the massive solar panels that cover the stadium's roof. Those solar panels will generate enough power to supply 100% of the stadium's energy needs.

That's impressive (and money-saving). But what really blows me away is the way the stadium is incorporating 5G technology into the building.

Golden1 has the largest indoor 4K scoreboard in the world. This ultra-high-definition scoreboard has 38 million pixels. And that's just the main scoreboard.

The stadium features another 800 strategically placed high-definition screens. Each one displays how fast players are running, how high they’re jumping, how hard they’re dunking the ball, etc.

If you aren't a sports fan, you might not realize how convenient it is to see stats in real time. And not just on the big screens.

I'm a season ticket holder at University of Washington for football, and I don't even bother to look at my phone during the game. If you've ever attended a large sporting event, you too were probably frustrated with the pathetically slow connection speed inside these venues.

Not at the Golden1Center. It will have over 1,000 Wi-Fi access points, and the connection speed is close to instant because of the 5G network installed by Verizon (VZ).

5G means more than being able to make posts on social media platforms on Instagram or Facebook. Stadium attendees have access to real-time stats, multi-camera instant replays, food and drink ordering , merchandise purchases, even the ability to adjust the under-seat cooling vents.

In fact, the stadium's 5G network is so fast that virtual reality headsets in the e-sports lounge can stream the game in real time from the best seats in the house: Courtside seats.

"We set up this 360-degree camera on the scores table, and what it allowed us to do was have the kids see the game as if they were sitting in a rare spot, and be able to put on the VR goggles ... they would be able to watch the game court-side," said Verizon V.P. of Network Engineering Brian Mecum.

The Sacramento Kings and Verizon invited 20 lucky high school students to watch the Kings-Los Angeles Lakers game at the arena. But instead of getting free seats, they got to watch the game on 5G-connected VR headsets.

That's pretty darn cool, but it is just the tip of the iceberg of how 5G is going to change our lives. And yes, there is a mountain of money to be made from installation and adoption of it.

Such as?

First of all, I would NOT buy Verizon, AT&T (T) or T-Mobile (TMUS). The phone carriers are going to spend billions on infrastructure equipment and modernization. It will take the years and years to recover those costs.

Instead, take a look at the companies providing the picks and shovels of 5G, such as Cisco (CSCO), Qualcomm (QCOM), Intel (INTC) and Skyworks Solutions (SWKS). However, my three favorite picks are non-U.S. companies that I think are easy doubles within two years.
