3M Company (MMM) Up 5.3% — Time to Turn Interest into Action?
3M Company (MMM) is posting a strong advance this Tuesday, last changing hands at $170.53 on the NYSE, up $8.52 from the prior close of $162.01. The 5.26% gain lifts the stock to within 7.8% of its 52-week high of $184.90, set on July 28, 2026. That leaves a clear path back toward the summer peak, and today's move puts that level well within reach.
Volume has reached approximately 5.26 million shares, compared with a 90-day average of roughly 3.24 million. That is about 62% above normal turnover with the session still open, showing real conviction behind the rally.
Why 3M Company Price is Moving Higher
The lead driver is a pair of company-specific data-center announcements on October 19. The first expands 3M's commercial relationship with an Amazon (AMZN) subsidiary. As part of that deal, 3M issued a seven-year warrant for up to 3,162,015 shares at $164.89 each. Of the warrant shares, 85% vest as Amazon buys 3M optical-connectivity and other data-center products, and full vesting of that portion requires $6 billion in cumulative purchases. That structure ties Amazon's upside directly to its buying volume, and it gives investors a concrete marker of potential demand from one of the world's largest data-center builders. 3M also announced a planned 4.7% investment in Taiwan's Genius Electronic Optical to develop and manufacture optical solutions for data-center connections. Taken together, the two deals secure both a customer and production capacity in one of the fastest-growing corners of industrial technology.
Q3 results, released on October 20, reinforced the story. Adjusted EPS came in at $2.50 against a $2.39 estimate, an $0.11 beat that was 12% above the year-earlier figure. Sales of $6.6 billion were essentially in line with the $6.61 billion consensus, and adjusted sales rose 4.2% year over year. The bigger story was profitability: adjusted operating margin reached 26.2%, up 110 basis points. Management then raised its 2026 adjusted EPS outlook to $9.10–$9.15 from $8.80–$8.95. A raise of that size this late in the year suggests the margin gains are holding up rather than being one-off.
This rally belongs to 3M alone. Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) is up just 0.22% today, and General Electric Company (GE) is down 3.97%. A gain of more than 5% in a session when Industrials heavyweights are mixed to lower shows investors are rewarding the data-center deals, the earnings beat and the higher guidance specifically.
What is the 3M Company Rating - Should I Buy?
Weiss Ratings assigns MMM a B rating. Current recommendation is Buy. The rating reflects a company with excellent operating quality and a sturdy balance sheet, and with improving momentum in the areas that held it back in prior years.
The strongest parts of the profile are its Excellent ratings on the Efficiency Index and the Solvency Index. A return on equity of 81.89% is an exceptional figure for a diversified manufacturer. It points to a leaner, more focused 3M that is getting far more out of its capital base after years of portfolio reshaping. The 110-basis-point expansion in adjusted operating margin to 26.2% this quarter shows that efficiency is still improving. The Excellent Solvency rating means 3M has the financial room to commit capital to the Genius Electronic Optical stake and to scale data-center production without straining its finances.
The ratings on the Growth Index, Total Return Index and Volatility Index, all Good, add nuance to the picture. Revenue growth of 2.46% and adjusted sales growth of 4.2% in Q3 are steady but not spectacular, which explains why the Growth Index is not rated higher. The Amazon agreement, with its $6 billion purchase threshold, is the kind of catalyst that could push the top line faster in coming years. The Good Total Return rating fits a stock that reached $184.90 in July and is now pushing back toward that level. The Good Volatility rating shows that even a 5.26% jump driven by concrete data-center deals and a guidance raise fits within a generally orderly trading pattern. The Fair rating on the Dividend Index is the softest spot. A 1.89% yield following the 2024 dividend reset makes 3M more of a total-return and earnings-growth story than an income holding.
Within the Industrials sector, MMM sits alongside Caterpillar Inc. (CAT, B), General Electric Company (GE, B) and RTX Corporation (RTX, B), and slightly ahead of Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT, B-). That puts 3M firmly among the sector's higher-quality names. Its new data-center growth angle sets it apart from defense- and machinery-focused peers.
About 3M Company
3M Company (MMM) is an Industrials company founded in 1902 as Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing and headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota. The company develops and manufactures a broad range of materials science-based products across its Safety and Industrial, Transportation and Electronics, and Consumer businesses. Its industrial portfolio includes abrasives, industrial adhesives and tapes, personal protective equipment such as respirators and hearing protection, and electrical products. Its consumer lineup includes some of the most recognized brands in the world, among them Post-it Notes, Scotch tape, Scotch-Brite cleaning products, Command hanging products and Filtrete air filters.
The Transportation and Electronics business is increasingly central to the company's direction. 3M supplies advanced films, display materials, specialty adhesives and electronics materials to automotive, semiconductor and consumer electronics manufacturers. Its optical-connectivity products now position the company inside the data-center buildout, where high-speed connections between servers are a critical bottleneck. After spinning off its healthcare business as Solventum in 2024, 3M became a more focused industrial and technology materials company.
3M's competitive advantages come from decades of research and development, a deep patent portfolio, and expertise across dozens of technology platforms that it applies across many end markets. Its global manufacturing footprint, established distribution relationships and long-standing customer ties across industrial, commercial and consumer channels make that breadth difficult for narrower competitors to match.
Investor Outlook
3M Company (MMM) carries a Weiss Rating of B (Buy), and the mix of a new data-center growth engine, expanding margins and higher 2026 guidance makes it a name with real momentum. Investors should watch for evidence that Amazon purchases are building toward the $6 billion vesting threshold, and for progress on the Genius Electronic Optical partnership. Delivering on the $9.10–$9.15 adjusted EPS outlook would also put the $184.90 52-week high squarely in view. See full rankings of all B-rated Industrials stocks inside the Weiss Stock Screener.
