Akamai Technologies, Inc. (AKAM) Down 6.7% — Do I Close the Door on This Trade?

  • AKAM fell 6.70% to $93.24 from $99.93 the previous trading day
  • Weiss Ratings assigns C (Hold)
  • Market cap is $14.36B

Akamai Technologies, Inc. (AKAM) is under heavy pressure this Wednesday morning, last changing hands at $93.24 on the NASDAQ. That is a $6.69 decline from the prior close of $99.93. The selloff extends a steep retreat that has taken the stock roughly 43.6% below its 52-week high of $165.45, set on May 13, 2026. Giving back more than two-fifths of its value in five months shows how quickly enthusiasm for the name has faded since spring.

Approximately 2.51 million shares have traded so far against a 90-day average of roughly 4.18 million. With the regular session still open, the stock has already reached about 60% of a typical full day's turnover.

Why Akamai Technologies, Inc. Price is Moving Lower

The most plausible driver is a macro shock that hit growth stocks broadly, compounded by a sentiment blow to cybersecurity names. September inflation came in hotter than expected. Headline CPI rose 3.7% year over year against a 3.6% forecast, and core CPI climbed 0.3% month over month versus the 0.2% consensus. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped to 5.29% from 5.19% before the report, and S&P 500 futures slipped 0.3%. Rising yields lower the present value of future earnings, and Akamai looks exposed at a forward P/E of 36.08. Oracle Corporation (ORCL) is down 7.01% today, a decline similar to AKAM's, which supports the view that this is a rate-driven repricing across the Information Technology sector.

The second pressure point is specific to security. A report that OpenAI is in early talks to acquire vulnerability specialist Trail of Bits raised concern that AI companies could become direct competitors to established security vendors. That matters for Akamai, because security is now the growth engine of its business. Cybersecurity peers have sold off alongside it. Palo Alto Networks (PANW) is down 4.48%, CrowdStrike (CRWD) has fallen 3.24%, and Fortinet (FTNT) dropped more than 3% on the report.

Akamai's fundamental backdrop leaves little cushion for either headwind. Q2 results, released on August 6, included revenue of $1.10 billion, ahead of the $1.09 billion estimate and up 5% year over year. Adjusted EPS of $1.59 edged past the $1.58 consensus but fell 8% from a year earlier. Security revenue grew 10%, while delivery revenue declined 6%. The non-GAAP operating margin narrowed 5 percentage points to 25%. When security is the segment carrying the growth story, any new competitive threat to it lands harder.

What is the Akamai Technologies, Inc. Rating - Should I Sell?

Weiss Ratings assigns AKAM a C rating. Current recommendation is Hold. The rating reflects a company with a sturdy financial foundation and a stock that has given investors a rough ride. Neither side is decisive enough to push the rating toward Buy or Sell.

The firmest support is the balance sheet. Akamai is rated Excellent on the Solvency Index, which means it can keep funding investment in security and cloud compute while its legacy delivery business shrinks, without stretching its finances. The Good rating on the Efficiency Index points the same direction. A 25% non-GAAP operating margin shows the business still converts revenue into meaningful operating income despite the recent compression. A 9.50% net profit margin and an 8.92% ROE are serviceable but not standout figures for a software and services company. That gap explains why the Efficiency Index stops at Good rather than Excellent.

Where the picture becomes more nuanced is growth and shareholder outcomes. The Growth Index is rated Fair, consistent with revenue growth of 5.38%. That figure combines a security segment expanding at a double-digit clip with a delivery business contracting by 6%, and the 8% year-over-year decline in adjusted EPS shows the growth has not yet reached the bottom line. The Total Return Index is also rated Fair, a fitting description for a stock trading more than 43% below its May high. The Volatility Index is rated Weak, and today's move illustrates why. A 6.70% single-session drop driven by an inflation print, a rise in Treasury yields, and an acquisition report involving another company is the kind of outsized swing that keeps this dimension rated low.

Within the Information Technology sector, Akamai is on par with Oracle Corporation (ORCL, C), Palo Alto Networks, Inc. (PANW, C), and CrowdStrike Holdings, Inc. (CRWD, C). It trails Palantir Technologies Inc. (PLTR, C+), which carries a slightly stronger risk/reward profile in the Weiss framework. Most of this peer group sits in Hold territory, which reflects caution across the group rather than a problem unique to Akamai.

About Akamai Technologies, Inc.

Akamai Technologies, Inc. (AKAM) is an Information Technology company in the Software and Services industry. Founded in 1998 and headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, it built its reputation on content delivery. Its globally distributed edge network moves web content, video, and software downloads closer to end users, reducing latency for some of the world's largest media, commerce, and enterprise customers. That delivery business is now the company's mature segment, and it faces pricing pressure and traffic shifts that have turned its revenue trajectory negative.

Akamai has spent years repositioning around security and cloud computing. Its security portfolio includes App & API Protector for web application and API defense, Prolexic for distributed denial-of-service mitigation, Bot Manager for detecting automated threats, and Guardicore Segmentation for limiting lateral movement inside corporate networks. Its Enterprise Application Access product supports zero-trust remote access. On the compute side, the 2022 acquisition of Linode became the foundation of Akamai Connected Cloud, which offers distributed cloud infrastructure for developers and enterprises running workloads at the edge.

The company's competitive advantage is the scale and reach of its distributed platform, which spans thousands of locations worldwide. That footprint lets Akamai absorb massive attack traffic, observe threat patterns across a broad customer base, and run compute close to users, capabilities that are hard to replicate quickly. Even so, Akamai competes with large hyperscale cloud providers and dedicated cybersecurity vendors. It also faces a new group of AI-focused entrants moving into vulnerability detection and security services.

Investor Outlook

Akamai's (AKAM) November 5 earnings call is the next clear test. Investors should watch whether security growth holds near 10% as the AI competitive narrative builds, whether delivery revenue declines begin to moderate, and whether operating margins stabilize after the 5-point compression last quarter. With Treasury yields above 5%, AKAM's valuation will also stay sensitive to inflation data. See full rankings of all C-rated Information Technology stocks inside the Weiss Stock Screener.
