Akamai Technologies, Inc. (AKAM) Up 6.5% — Is Now the Time to Move?

  • AKAM rose 6.53% to $91.54 from $85.93 the previous trading day
  • Weiss Ratings assigns C- (Hold)
  • Market cap is $12.35B

Akamai Technologies, Inc. (AKAM) staged a forceful recovery this Friday, closing at $91.54 on the NASDAQ —  a $5.61 gain that erased a meaningful portion of the post-earnings damage from earlier in the week. The stock still sits roughly 44.7% below its 52-week high of $165.45, reached on May 13, 2026. That gap is where the opportunity lies for investors willing to look past one soft quarter of guidance toward the multi-year cloud buildout management just put numbers behind.

Volume reached approximately 8.36 million shares, nearly double the 90-day average of roughly 4.35 million. Buyers stepped in with real size on the rebound.

Why Akamai Technologies, Inc. Price is Moving Higher

The rally is a rebound built on the longer-term cloud growth story, helped by a broad technology recovery. The Nasdaq was up 1.73% by 10:21 a.m. ET. Shopify Inc. (SHOP) climbed 3.59% and Oracle Corporation (ORCL) gained 0.77%. Akamai's move was more than double the gain in either name because investors reassessed what the company disclosed on November 5. Akamai said it has secured more than $14 billion in multi-year Cloud Infrastructure Services (CIS) commitments, anchored by an $11.6 billion, seven-year agreement with Anthropic. Management expects CIS revenue to more than double to between $1.1 billion and $1.3 billion in 2027, with total company revenue growth of 17% to 22% that year and revenue above $7 billion in 2028. That is a dramatic acceleration for a business that grew revenue 6% year over year in the third quarter, and Friday's buyers treated the post-earnings selloff as an entry point into that trajectory.

Q3 results themselves cleared the bar. Adjusted EPS came in at $1.77 against the $1.67 consensus. Revenue of $1.122 billion edged past the roughly $1.118 billion estimate. Profitability is the softer part of the report: adjusted EPS fell 5% from the prior year and GAAP net income dropped 16%, reflecting the investment required to stand up the CIS business at scale.

Q4 guidance triggered the initial selloff. Management guided revenue to $1.145 billion to $1.170 billion against a $1.197 billion expectation, and adjusted EPS to $1.50 to $1.70 versus $1.78 expected. Management attributed part of the shortfall to roughly $30 million of CIS revenue shifting into 2027 after supply-chain and data-center delays, and said those issues have been resolved. That revenue is delayed, not lost, and it lands in the same year management expects CIS to more than double. BofA kept its Buy rating while trimming its price target from $185 to $155. Even the reduced target sits well above Friday's $91.54 close.

What is the Akamai Technologies, Inc. Rating - Should I Buy?

Weiss Ratings assigns AKAM a C- rating. Current recommendation is Hold. The rating captures a company with a strong financial foundation whose stock has been punishing to hold. Friday's rally and the $14 billion in CIS commitments give the bull case fresh momentum, but they have not yet shown up in the trailing data that drives the rating.

The balance sheet is the strongest part of the case. Akamai is rated Excellent on the Solvency Index, and that matters for a company committing heavily to data-center capacity to serve customers like Anthropic. The Good rating on the Efficiency Index reflects a business that still converts revenue into profit while funding that expansion. Its 9.50% profit margin and 8.92% ROE are modest in absolute terms, but they come during a period of deliberate investment rather than a mature harvest phase. As CIS revenue scales against infrastructure already in place, those returns have a clear path higher.

The picture becomes more nuanced on the performance side. The Fair rating on the Growth Index reflects 5.38% revenue growth and a 5% decline in Q3 adjusted EPS. Those figures describe a mid-single-digit grower today, not the 17% to 22% grower management projects for 2027. The Total Return Index is also rated Fair, consistent with a stock that has given back about 44.7% from its May peak. The Weak Volatility Index is visible in this week's trading alone, with a sharp guidance-driven decline followed immediately by Friday's 6.53% recovery. A forward P/E of 31.02 means the market is already pricing in some of the CIS acceleration, so execution on the 2027 targets will decide whether these ratings improve.

Within the Information Technology sector, Akamai trails Oracle Corporation (ORCL, C), CrowdStrike Holdings, Inc. (CRWD, C), and Palo Alto Networks, Inc. (PANW, C). International Business Machines Corporation (IBM, C+) sits a notch higher still. Akamai's gap to these peers is narrow and rests mainly on trailing growth and volatility, the two areas where the new CIS commitments could have the most effect.

About Akamai Technologies, Inc.

Akamai Technologies, Inc. (AKAM) is an Information Technology company in the Software and Services industry. Founded in 1998 and headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the company built one of the world's largest distributed edge networks. Its content delivery business pioneered the model of serving web content, video, and software downloads from servers positioned close to end users. Major media companies, e-commerce platforms, and enterprises still rely on that network to deliver digital experiences quickly and reliably at global scale.

Over the past decade Akamai has shifted toward security, which has become its largest growth engine. Prolexic provides DDoS mitigation, App & API Protector defends web applications and APIs, and Bot Manager filters automated traffic. Guardicore Segmentation brings zero-trust microsegmentation to enterprise data centers and cloud environments. Because these products run across the same edge network that carries customer traffic, Akamai can detect and block threats at a scale few security vendors can match.

The newest pillar is cloud computing, built on the 2022 acquisition of Linode and expanded into Akamai Connected Cloud. The company's Cloud Infrastructure Services business offers compute capacity spread across a broad footprint of locations, a design suited to latency-sensitive and AI inference workloads. The seven-year Anthropic agreement shows that this distributed architecture is winning large, long-duration contracts. Together, the network's reach, long-standing enterprise relationships, and the combination of delivery, security, and compute on one platform form a competitive position that is difficult to replicate.

Investor Outlook

Akamai Technologies (AKAM) carries a C- (Hold) rating, but Friday's rally shows investors are beginning to look past a soft Q4 guide toward the CIS opportunity. The key watch items are a clean recovery of the roughly $30 million in delayed CIS revenue, steady progress toward $1.1 billion to $1.3 billion in 2027 CIS revenue, and evidence that 17% to 22% top-line growth is materializing on schedule.
