Alcoa Corporation (AA) Up 7.7% — Should I Participate in This Run?
Alcoa Corporation (AA) is rallying this Friday, last trading at $43.52 on the NYSE, up $3.10 from the prior close of $40.42. The 7.67% jump gives the stock real upward momentum, though it still trades roughly 48.4% below its 52-week high of $84.38, set on June 2, 2026. That gap is the opportunity. Alcoa is posting sharply stronger financial results while the share price sits at less than half its June peak.
Volume stands at roughly 3.59 million shares with the session still open, compared with a 90-day average of about 5.19 million. Trading has already reached nearly 70% of a typical full day's turnover.
Why Alcoa Corporation Price is Moving Higher
The main driver is Alcoa's Q3 report, released after the close on October 15. Adjusted EPS came in at $1.82, beating the $1.54 consensus by $0.28. Revenue of $3.704 billion fell $76 million short of the $3.78 billion estimate, but the market looked past that small miss to how quickly profits grew. Revenue rose 23.7% year over year. Net income more than doubled to $483 million from $232 million, and reported EPS climbed to $1.81 from $0.88. Adjusted EBITDA nearly tripled, reaching $789 million against $270 million a year earlier.
Operations explain much of the beat. Better performance at the Pinjarra refinery lifted alumina production 11% sequentially to 2.5 million metric tons. Free cash flow reached $472 million, which gives Alcoa real financial flexibility at this stage of the cycle. Management's guidance points to more of the same: it expects higher Q4 production and shipments in both the Alumina and Aluminum segments. It also flagged about $30 million of sequential cost pressure in the aluminum segment, a manageable amount next to the quarter's EBITDA of $789 million.
The sector added support, though it does not account for Alcoa's outsized gain. Aluminum prices rose 0.85% and Century Aluminum (CENX) was up 5.5% at about the same time, so Alcoa is outrunning even its closest pure-play peer. Across the broader Materials group, AngloGold Ashanti plc (AU) gained 2.27% and Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. (MLM) added 2.00%, both well behind Alcoa. Analyst sentiment was already improving before the report. On October 14, Barclays initiated coverage at Overweight with a $55 price target and cited potential acquisition-related upside. That target implies about 26% upside from the current price.
What is the Alcoa Corporation Rating - Should I Buy?
Weiss Ratings assigns AA a C+ rating. Current recommendation is Hold. The C+ sits at the top of the Hold range. It reflects a company whose fundamentals are clearly strengthening while its share price has yet to recover from a steep decline since June.
Alcoa's business-quality ratings are strong. The Excellent rating on the Growth Index reflects 31.41% revenue growth, which is a notable pace for a commodity producer, and this week's results show that growth continuing. The Excellent rating on the Solvency Index indicates a balance sheet that can fund operations comfortably, and $472 million of quarterly free cash flow backs up that view. The Efficiency Index is rated Good, supported by an 18.23% ROE. That return is solid for a capital-intensive miner, refiner, and smelter. A 9.38% profit margin explains why the rating stops short of Excellent: like any aluminum producer, Alcoa's margins depend heavily on energy and raw-material costs.
Where the picture becomes more nuanced is in the market-facing measures. The stock is rated Fair on the Total Return Index because shareholders who bought near the $84.38 high are still sitting on deep losses, even after today's rally. The Weak Volatility Index reflects that same large swing from the June peak. Today's 7.67% earnings-driven jump shows how sharply the shares can move in either direction. The Dividend Index is also rated Weak because a 0.99% yield makes Alcoa a stock owned for earnings leverage rather than income. That leverage looks attractive right now. A forward P/E of 8.39 against trailing EPS of $4.82 is a modest valuation for a company whose quarterly net income just doubled.
Within the Materials sector, Alcoa sits alongside AngloGold Ashanti plc (AU, C+). It ranks ahead of Vale S.A. (VALE, C), Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. (MLM, C), Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (APD, C-), and Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. (SHECF, C-). Alcoa is among the stronger names in the group on a risk/reward basis.
About Alcoa Corporation
Alcoa Corporation (AA) is a Materials company and one of the world's leading vertically integrated aluminum producers. Founded in 1888 and headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, it operates across the full aluminum value chain, from mining bauxite through refining alumina to smelting and casting primary aluminum. Its business is organized into two segments, Alumina and Aluminum. Refining operations in Western Australia, including the Pinjarra refinery, are central to its alumina output. Its smelting footprint spans North America, Europe, Brazil, and Australia.
Alcoa's product line covers bauxite, smelter-grade alumina, and primary aluminum. The aluminum is sold as standard ingot and as value-added cast products such as billet, slab, and foundry alloys. Customers in aerospace, automotive, packaging, building and construction, and industrial manufacturing use these products. Alcoa has also built a position in lower-carbon materials. Its EcoLum low-carbon aluminum and EcoSource low-carbon alumina brands are aimed at customers working to cut emissions across their supply chains. In certain regions the company also owns energy assets that supply power to its smelting operations.
Alcoa's competitive strength comes from owning every stage of production. It controls high-quality bauxite reserves and large-scale refining capacity, which lets it capture margin at multiple points in the chain and supply its own smelters with alumina. Its access to long-term and often renewable power sources, together with decades of process know-how, sets it apart from less integrated competitors. Alcoa's established relationships with major industrial customers are another advantage. These assets still leave earnings exposed to global aluminum and alumina prices, but they give the company strong operating leverage when markets move in its favor.
Investor Outlook
Alcoa Corporation (AA) carries a Weiss Rating of C+ (Hold) and enters the final quarter of 2026 with sharply higher earnings, strong cash generation, and guidance for rising production and shipments in both segments. Investors should watch whether Q4 output and cost control live up to that outlook, whether Pinjarra's improvement holds, and whether aluminum prices stay supportive enough to narrow the stock's discount to its $84.38 high.
