AngloGold Ashanti plc (AU) Down 5.5% — Is This Where I Exit Stage Left?

  • AU fell 5.48% to $86.48 from $91.49 the previous trading day
  • Weiss Ratings assigns C+ (Hold)
  • Market cap is $46.70B with a dividend yield of 4.94%

AngloGold Ashanti plc (AU) is under pressure this Thursday, last trading at $86.48 on the NYSE —  a $5.01 decline from the prior close of $91.49. The drop widens the gap from the stock's 52-week high of $129.14, reached on March 2, 2026, to roughly 33.0%. AU still sits about 38.3% above the bottom of its 52-week range of $62.55, which means the recent decline has eroded gains but has not erased them.

Volume so far is running light, with about 1.04 million shares traded against a 90-day average of roughly 2.87 million. With the session still open, turnover stands at a little over a third of a typical full day.

Why AngloGold Ashanti plc Price is Moving Lower

The selloff is industry-wide and starts with the gold price. Gold fell 1.3% to $4,085.29 an ounce, its lowest level since October 14. According to Reuters, rising oil prices strengthened fears that inflation would keep interest rates higher for longer. Brent crude climbed 2.78% to $111.85 a barrel, which pushed rate expectations in a direction that tends to weigh on non-yielding bullion. Gold miners carry operating leverage to the metal, so they absorbed the hit in amplified form. VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX) was down 5.52% in an 11:47 a.m. EDT, Agnico Eagle (AEM) had fallen 5.94% by 1:41 p.m., and Newmont (NEM) was down 4.34% at noon. AU's 5.48% decline sits squarely within that range, which marks this as an industry move rather than a company-specific verdict.

The pressure did not extend across the broader Materials sector. Vale S.A. (VALE) was down 3.66% on the day, but construction aggregates producer Vulcan Materials Company (VMC) was up 0.88%. That split shows today's weakness was concentrated among names tied to metals and commodity sentiment.

The fundamental backdrop gives investors little cushion on a day like this. AngloGold's Q2 report on July 31 showed adjusted EPS of $1.98 against a $2.03 estimate, and revenue of $3.104 billion fell short of the $3.20 billion consensus. Year over year, the headline figures were strong: revenue rose 27% and net income jumped 48% to $1.192 billion. The operating details were weaker. Gold production fell 7% to 744,000 ounces, and all-in sustaining costs rose 22% to $2,039 an ounce. Rising costs and falling output leave the company more dependent on the gold price, and that dependence is exactly what is working against the stock today. Management reaffirmed full-year production, cost, and capital-spending guidance and expects output to be weighted toward the second half. That makes Q3 results, expected before the market opens on November 5, an important test.

What is the AngloGold Ashanti plc Rating - Should I Sell?

Weiss Ratings assigns AU a C+ rating. The rating was upgraded on 9/25/2026. Current recommendation is Hold. The upgrade less than a month ago reflects improved financial results driven by elevated gold prices. The C+ ceiling, however, signals that the risk/reward balance still calls for patience rather than aggressive buying, particularly when a single day's move in bullion can take more than 5% off the shares.

The balance sheet and earnings power are the strongest parts of the profile. AngloGold is rated Excellent on the Solvency Index, which means the company can withstand swings in the gold price without financial strain. That matters for a miner absorbing a 22% jump in sustaining costs. The Good rating on the Efficiency Index is supported by a 48% increase in quarterly net income to $1.192 billion, evidence that higher realized prices are reaching the bottom line even as unit costs climb. A Good rating on the Dividend Index fits that picture, because the 4.94% yield is unusually generous for a gold producer and depends on the cash generation the metal price has made possible. The Total Return Index is also rated Good, which reflects a stock that still trades nearly 40% above its 52-week low despite giving back a third of its peak value.

The picture becomes more nuanced on growth and stability. The Growth Index is rated only Fair despite 26.95% revenue growth, and the reason is that the growth comes almost entirely from price rather than volume. Production fell 7% year over year, and quarter-over-quarter revenue rose just 1.0%, from $3.07 billion to $3.10 billion. The Fair rating on the Volatility Index explains why the overall rating is not higher. A 52-week range from $62.55 to $129.14, together with today's gold-driven decline in line with GDX, shows how closely the shares track a commodity the company cannot control. A forward P/E of 25.13 also leaves limited room for operational setbacks if the second-half production ramp disappoints.

Within the Materials sector, AngloGold's rating matches Vulcan Materials Company (VMC, C+) and sits ahead of Vale S.A. (VALE, C) and Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (APD, C-). That relative standing is respectable, but it does not change the Hold recommendation.

About AngloGold Ashanti plc

AngloGold Ashanti plc (AU) is a Materials company focused on gold exploration and production, with operations across Africa, Australia, and the Americas. Gold is its primary product, and the company also recovers by-products such as silver and sulphuric acid from its mining and processing activities. Its flagship asset is the 100%-owned Geita mine in the Lake Victoria goldfields of northwestern Tanzania, a cornerstone property within its African portfolio.

The company was incorporated in 1944 and is now headquartered in Greenwood Village, Colorado. That base reflects its broader strategic presence in the Americas alongside its long-standing African roots. Operating across three continents spreads AngloGold's exposure across multiple jurisdictions, geological settings, and cost structures. This reduces dependence on any single mine, although it also exposes the company to a range of political, regulatory, and labor environments.

AngloGold's competitive position rests on its scale as one of the larger global gold producers, its full ownership of significant assets such as Geita, and a portfolio deep enough to support production guidance across multiple regions. Like all gold miners, its fortunes are tied to the gold price and to its ability to control the extraction and processing costs that determine how much of that price it keeps as margin.

Investor Outlook

AngloGold Ashanti plc (AU) carries a Weiss Rating of C+ (Hold), and today's decline shows how quickly gold-price and interest-rate sentiment can override strong headline earnings. Investors should watch the November 5 Q3 report for evidence that the promised second-half production ramp is materializing and that all-in sustaining costs, which stood at $2,039 an ounce last quarter, are stabilizing.
