GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. (GFS) Up 5.5% — Should I Go From Curious to Committed?
GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. (GFS) is gaining ground on Friday, last changing hands at $38.35 on the NASDAQ — a $1.99 gain over the prior close of $36.36. The advance gives the stock some breathing room after a punishing stretch. GFS still sits about 58.6% below its 52-week high of $92.55, set on May 26, 2026. That distance shows how much ground the shares have given up since late spring, and how much recovery potential remains if the semiconductor backdrop stabilizes.
Volume stands at roughly 1.42 million shares with the session still underway, compared with a 90-day average of about 4.47 million. That is about one-third of a typical full day's turnover so far.
Why GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. Price is Moving Higher
Friday's gain is a sector story. On November 5, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 12.25% to 9,011.14 as investors worried that political opposition could slow U.S. data-center construction. Friday morning brought a sharp rebound, with the index up 4.32%. Lam Research (LRCX) rose more than 9% in premarket trading, Micron (MU) climbed 7.5%, and Applied Materials (AMAT) gained more than 6%. GFS's advance fits that pattern. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is up 9.64% and Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR) has added 6.62%, which shows the buying is broad across the chip complex. The data-center concerns have not disappeared, but Friday's bounce suggests the market saw Thursday's selloff as excessive for many names.
The rebound looks better grounded for GFS because the company's fundamentals were strong heading into the selloff. On November 4, GFS reported Q3 revenue of $1.899 billion, up 13% from a year earlier and ahead of the $1.889 billion consensus. Adjusted EPS of $0.53 beat the $0.50 estimate. Adjusted gross margin rose to 31.4% from 26.0% a year ago, a 540-basis-point improvement that points to better pricing and utilization across its fabs. Management also said AI-related chip demand is accelerating and that capacity is booked through 2027.
Q4 guidance supported the results. The revenue outlook of $1.975 billion to $2.025 billion brackets the $2.002 billion consensus. Adjusted EPS guidance of $0.54 to $0.64 sits above the $0.56 estimate at nearly every point in the range. The main concern from the report was the roughly $4 billion of net capital spending planned for 2027. Roughly one-third of that, however, is supported by customer prepayments, which means customers are committing capital ahead of the capacity they expect to need.
What is the GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. Rating - Should I Buy?
Weiss Ratings assigns GFS a C rating. Current recommendation is Hold. The rating reflects a company whose operations are improving faster than its stock has rewarded shareholders. The upside case rests on the business, while the stock's recent behavior keeps the overall rating in Hold territory.
The strongest part of the profile is the balance sheet. GFS is rated Excellent on the Solvency Index, which matters for a foundry that must spend billions to keep its fabs competitive. That financial strength, along with customer prepayments covering about a third of next year's spending, lets GlobalFoundries pursue its 2027 expansion without stretching itself. The Good rating on the Growth Index reflects trailing revenue growth of 5.81%, a pace the latest quarter's 13% year-over-year increase is now outrunning. The Good rating on the Efficiency Index rests on a 10.31% profit margin and a 6.17% ROE. Those figures are respectable for a capital-heavy manufacturer, and the jump in gross margin to 31.4% suggests both could improve as utilization stays high.
The weaker ratings come from the stock's behavior rather than the business. The Weak rating on the Volatility Index fits a stock that fell sharply with the sector on Thursday and is rebounding more than 5% on Friday, all while trading nearly 59% below its May peak. That same decline explains why the Total Return Index is rated only Fair, since holders have been through a deep drawdown despite steadily improving results. The Very Weak rating on the Dividend Index reflects a 0.59% yield, which is not a meaningful part of the investment case. A forward P/E of 31.57 also shows the market is already pricing in some of the growth ahead.
Within the Information Technology sector, GFS sits alongside QUALCOMM Incorporated (QCOM, C) and Marvell Technology, Inc. (MRVL, C). It ranks one notch below Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD, C+) and Monolithic Power Systems, Inc. (MPWR, C+), both of which carry slightly stronger risk/reward profiles in Weiss's framework. Improving margins and a top-tier balance sheet give GFS a credible path to closing that gap.
About GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc.
GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. (GFS) is an Information Technology company and one of the world's largest pure-play semiconductor foundries. It manufactures chips designed by other companies. Formed in 2009 from the manufacturing operations of Advanced Micro Devices, GlobalFoundries is headquartered in Malta, New York. It runs fabrication facilities in the United States, Germany, and Singapore, a footprint that has grown more valuable as chip customers and governments prioritize supply-chain resilience and geographic diversity.
Rather than racing toward the most advanced leading-edge process nodes, GFS focuses on differentiated specialty technologies. Its 22FDX platform, built on fully depleted silicon-on-insulator technology, targets low-power and connected devices. Its FinFET offerings serve higher-performance applications. The company also manufactures RF silicon-on-insulator and silicon germanium chips for wireless and communications, BCD processes for power management, embedded memory solutions, and silicon photonics used in high-speed data-center connectivity. These technologies serve customers in smart mobile devices, automotive, communications infrastructure and data centers, the Internet of Things, and aerospace and defense.
GFS' competitive advantages come from its specialty process portfolio and long-term customer agreements, including arrangements that tie capacity commitments to prepayments. Its standing as a Trusted Foundry for U.S. government and defense programs also sets it apart. Because it emphasizes proprietary specialty platforms over commodity leading-edge capacity, its customers tend to have high switching costs. That gives GFS a durable position in markets where reliability, power efficiency, and secure domestic manufacturing matter as much as raw transistor density.
Investor Outlook
GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. (GFS) carries a Weiss Rating of C (Hold), backed by a strong Q3, expanding margins, and an Excellent-rated balance sheet. The stock still trades far below its May high, which leaves room for meaningful recovery. Investors should watch whether Q4 results land within the $1.975 billion to $2.025 billion revenue guidance, how the debate over U.S. data-center construction affects chip sentiment, and how efficiently management deploys its roughly $4 billion of planned 2027 capital spending.
