Howmet Aerospace Inc. (HWM) Down 4.5% — Should I Close Out and Redeploy?

  • HWM fell 4.55% to $210.01 from $220.03 the previous trading day
  • Weiss Ratings assigns B (Buy)
  • Market cap is $87.75B with a dividend yield of 0.23%

Howmet Aerospace Inc. (HWM) is retreating in today's session, last changing hands at $210.01 on the NYSE, a $10.02 decline from the prior close of $220.03. The slide extends a pullback that has been building for more than two months. HWM now trades roughly 32.3% below its 52-week high of $310.00, a level the stock reached on August 6, 2026, the same day the company delivered its second-quarter beat and raised full-year guidance. Giving back nearly a third of that value in about ten weeks shows how quickly sentiment has cooled on a stock that had been priced for near-flawless execution.

Volume so far stands at about 773,692 shares against a 90-day average of roughly 2.94 million. Turnover is tracking at roughly a quarter of a typical full session with the regular session still open.

Why Howmet Aerospace Inc. Price is Moving Lower

The most plausible driver is company-specific. Investors are worried about future competition in Howmet's industrial gas-turbine business, and the broader tape offers no cover for the decline. Coverage on October 20 highlighted SpaceX's plan to produce turbine blades and vanes at a new foundry in Bastrop, Texas. Elon Musk said in-house casting could bring natural-gas turbines online up to 18 months sooner. The concern is that SpaceX could eventually make some of these parts itself and ease the supply shortage that has given Howmet unusual pricing power in turbine castings. The market has already shown how sensitive it is to this theme. Howmet fell 7.5% on August 31 after Musk's earlier comments, and today's decline suggests that risk has not been fully priced out.

The divergence from the wider market makes the stock-specific read clear. The S&P 500 opened up 0.41% and the Nasdaq rose 1.11%, while most of Howmet's Industrials peers traded higher. RTX Corporation (RTX) gained 0.73% and GE Vernova Inc. (GEV), another major gas-turbine producer, added 0.33%. The one notable laggard was General Electric Company (GE), down 1.87% despite beating earnings estimates and raising guidance. That shows how little patience investors have for aerospace names trading at rich multiples, even on good news. Sell-side support has not stemmed the selling. Citi and Bernstein both maintained Buy ratings, and Bernstein pointed to Howmet's more than 50% share of industrial gas-turbine blade castings and its long-term agreements with major producers as reasons the SpaceX threat may be limited. RBC's October 15 cut of its price target to $300 from $350, while keeping an Outperform rating, had already added a cautious note to the backdrop.

The underlying business gives little reason for concern on its own. Howmet's most recent quarter, reported on August 6, showed adjusted EPS of $1.33 against a $1.24 estimate and revenue of $2.55 billion versus $2.43 billion expected. Revenue rose 24% year over year and adjusted EPS climbed 46%. Management raised its 2026 revenue outlook to $10.0 billion to $10.1 billion and its adjusted EPS outlook to $5.23 to $5.31. The problem is valuation. At a forward P/E of 47.37, the stock leaves little room for any threat to its competitive position, however distant. With Q3 results scheduled for October 29, investors appear unwilling to carry that premium through an unresolved competitive question.

What is the Howmet Aerospace Inc. Rating - Should I Sell?

Weiss Ratings assigns HWM a B rating. Current recommendation is Buy. Today's decline does not change the core assessment. The B rating reflects a company whose operating fundamentals remain among the strongest in its peer group, even as the stock absorbs a sharp repricing tied to competitive concerns rather than deteriorating results.

The fundamental case rests on three Excellent sub-index ratings. The Excellent rating on the Growth Index is supported by 24.06% revenue growth and a 46% jump in adjusted EPS in the latest quarter. That pace is unusual for a manufacturer of this scale and reflects how tightly constrained aerospace and turbine supply chains have become. The Efficiency Index carries the same Excellent rating, backed by a 34.73% ROE and a 20.52% profit margin. For a company that casts and forges complex metal components, those returns signal real pricing leverage with engine makers and airframers. Howmet's Excellent Solvency Index rating rounds out that strength. It suggests the balance sheet can comfortably support capacity investment if management chooses to defend its castings share more aggressively.

The picture becomes more measured on the market-facing dimensions. Howmet is rated Fair on the Total Return Index, and the reason is visible in the price. A stock sitting more than 32% below its August 6 high has handed back a substantial portion of its gains, and today's slide adds to that drawdown. The Volatility Index is rated Good. However, two sharp single-day declines tied to SpaceX headlines, the 7.5% drop on August 31 and today's 4.55% slide, illustrate why that rating is not higher. The Dividend Index sits at Fair, consistent with a 0.23% yield that makes HWM a growth holding rather than an income vehicle.

Within the Industrials sector, Howmet sits alongside Caterpillar Inc. (CAT, B), RTX Corporation (RTX, B), and GE Vernova Inc. (GEV, B). It ranks a notch ahead of Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT, B-). Few Industrials names pair growth of this magnitude with Excellent efficiency and solvency ratings. Still, the Fair Total Return Index rating is a reminder that strong fundamentals have not protected shareholders from a steep drawdown since August.

About Howmet Aerospace Inc.

Howmet Aerospace Inc. (HWM) is an Industrials company headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that supplies engineered metal products to the aerospace and transportation markets. The company took its current form in 2020, when the former Arconic separated its businesses and the aerospace-focused portion was renamed Howmet. Its Engine Products segment is the centerpiece of the business. That segment produces airfoils, turbine blades and vanes, seamless rolled rings, and other precision castings used in commercial and military jet engines as well as industrial gas turbines for power generation.

Beyond engines, Howmet's Fastening Systems segment manufactures aerospace fasteners, rings, and latches used throughout airframes and engines. Its Engineered Structures segment produces titanium and aluminum forgings, extrusions, and structural assemblies for commercial and defense aircraft. The Forged Wheels segment supplies lightweight forged aluminum wheels to the commercial truck market, giving the company a transportation business alongside its aerospace core. Its customers include the world's largest engine makers, airframers, and gas-turbine producers, many of whom are bound to Howmet through long-term supply agreements.

Howmet's competitive position rests on technical difficulty and qualification barriers. Single-crystal turbine blade casting requires specialized metallurgy, years of process refinement, and lengthy certification with each engine program. That has allowed Howmet to build more than 50% share in industrial gas-turbine blade castings. Rising demand for both commercial aircraft engines and power-generation turbines has pushed its capacity to the limit, reinforcing its pricing leverage. The same scarcity, however, gives well-funded new entrants a reason to consider building their own casting capability.

Investor Outlook

Howmet Aerospace Inc. (HWM) carries a Weiss Rating of B (Buy). Its fundamentals remain excellent, but a premium valuation leaves the stock exposed to competitive headlines like today's. Investors should watch the October 29 Q3 report for management commentary on long-term agreements, industrial gas-turbine pricing, and any perceived threat from in-house casting efforts such as SpaceX's Bastrop foundry. Whether the raised $5.23 to $5.31 EPS guidance holds will also be a key test. See full rankings of all B-rated Industrials stocks inside the Weiss Stock Screener.
