IAMGOLD Corporation (IAG) Down 5.3% — Should I Turn This Into Liquidity?
IAMGOLD Corporation (IAG) is under pressure in today's session, last trading at $17.31 on the NYSE, down $0.96 from the prior close of $18.27. The decline extends a pullback that has already taken a meaningful bite out of the stock's gains. IAG now trades roughly 30.4% below its 52-week high of $24.87, reached on March 2, 2026. That is a sizable gap for a producer whose underlying operating results have been strong, and it shows how much of the stock's direction now depends on the gold price rather than on company execution.
Volume is running light so far, with about 1.78 million shares traded against a 90-day average of roughly 5.42 million. With the regular session still open, turnover stands at about a third of a typical full day.
Why IAMGOLD Corporation Price is Moving Lower
The selling traces to Wednesday's September consumer price report, which came in hotter than expected and hit gold miners across the board. Headline CPI rose 3.7% year over year against a 3.6% forecast, and core CPI climbed 0.3% month over month versus the 0.2% consensus. That shifted rate expectations sharply. According to Reuters, the market-implied probability of an October Fed hike jumped from 22% to 44% after the release. Spot gold fell 1.7% to $4,086.06 an ounce, and the U.S. dollar index rose 0.4%. A stronger dollar and the prospect of higher real yields are about the least favorable combination for a non-yielding asset, and they hurt the producers whose earnings depend on it.
The damage was sector-wide. The gold-miners ETF (GDX) dropped 3.82%. Newmont Corporation (NEM) fell 4.28% and Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM) declined 5.96%, so IAG's drop sits near the steeper end of the group. That is typical for an intermediate producer, which tends to move more than the largest senior miners when the metal price swings. Copper names were caught up as well, with Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FCX) down 4.07%, as rate fears weighed on commodity equities broadly.
The company's own fundamentals do not explain today's move. IAMGOLD's most recent quarter, reported on August 6, delivered adjusted EPS of $0.42, matching consensus. Revenue of $856.9 million fell short of the $882.9 million estimate, but it was still up 48% from a year earlier, and net earnings climbed to $230.5 million from $78.7 million. Management held full-year production guidance at 720,000 to 820,000 ounces. On October 13, one day before the CPI print, RBC maintained its Buy rating and $23 price target. The next company-specific test arrives on November 5, when IAMGOLD reports Q3 results after the close. Until then, the stock is likely to keep following gold and the rate outlook.
What is the IAMGOLD Corporation Rating - Should I Sell?
Weiss Ratings assigns IAG a B rating. Current recommendation is Buy. Today's decline does not change the core argument behind that rating. IAMGOLD is producing meaningfully more gold at historically high prices, and that is showing up clearly in its revenue and earnings.
The strongest parts of the profile hold together. The Excellent rating on the Growth Index rests on 47.51% revenue growth, and that expansion reflects higher volumes as well as higher prices. The jump in quarterly net earnings to $230.5 million from $78.7 million shows that the added ounces are reaching the bottom line. The Excellent Solvency Index rating indicates the balance sheet has come through a heavy development phase in good shape, which matters for a miner that must keep funding sustaining capital whatever gold does. The Excellent Total Return Index reflects what holders have earned over the full measurement period, even after the stock's retreat from its March high.
The picture is less clean on the other two dimensions. The Efficiency Index is rated Good rather than Excellent. A 32.33% ROE and a 31.40% profit margin are strong figures for a gold producer, but mining stays capital-intensive and cost-sensitive, and those returns rest heavily on a gold price IAMGOLD does not control. The Fair rating on the Volatility Index is easy to see in today's session. A hotter inflation print pushed IAG down more than 5%, steeper than the GDX decline, and the stock now sits about 30% below its 52-week high. That sensitivity to macro data is the main reason caution is warranted even with a Buy recommendation. At a forward P/E of 9.25, the valuation already assumes some of that risk, but it offers no protection from a sustained drop in the metal.
Among Materials peers, IAMGOLD sits alongside Newmont Corporation (NEM, B) and Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FCX, B), and ahead of Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM, B-). It trails Southern Copper Corporation (SCCO, B+) and Grupo México, S.A.B. de C.V. (GMBXF, A-), both of which carry stronger risk/reward profiles in Weiss's framework. Grupo México was the only name in the group to gain today, up 0.45%.
About IAMGOLD Corporation
IAMGOLD Corporation (IAG) is a Materials company focused on gold mining. It is headquartered in Toronto and listed on both the New York and Toronto stock exchanges. The company's operations are concentrated in Canada and West Africa. Its flagship asset is the Côté Gold mine in northern Ontario, a large open-pit operation developed in partnership with Sumitomo Metal Mining that reached commercial production in 2024. Côté has transformed IAMGOLD's production profile and is the main source of the company's recent growth in revenue and earnings.
Beyond Côté, IAMGOLD operates the Westwood complex in Quebec and the Essakane mine in Burkina Faso, which has long been a core contributor to the company's output. The company also maintains a pipeline of exploration and development properties, with a growing focus on the Chibougamau district of Quebec. That focus gives IAMGOLD options to extend its mine life and add ounces in a jurisdiction considered relatively low-risk.
IAMGOLD's competitive position rests on its newly built, long-life Canadian production base, which lowers its overall jurisdictional risk compared with its historical concentration in West Africa. The scale of Côté also gives the company a cost structure and reserve life that many intermediate producers lack. Like every gold miner, however, IAMGOLD remains exposed to swings in the metal price, cost inflation for energy and labor, and the political and security conditions in the countries where it operates.
Investor Outlook
IAMGOLD Corporation (IAG) carries a Weiss Rating of B (Buy), backed by strong growth and a solid balance sheet, though today's inflation-driven drop shows how closely the stock follows gold and Fed expectations. Investors should watch the gold price and the October Fed decision, along with the November 5 Q3 report, for progress toward the 720,000 to 820,000 ounce production target.
