Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. (ICE) Up 5.9% — Do I Buy Into This Momentum Play?

  • ICE rose 5.87% to $165.11 from $155.96 the previous trading day
  • Weiss Ratings assigns B- (Buy)
  • Market cap is $87.56B with a dividend yield of 1.31%

Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. (ICE) is pushing decisively higher this Thursday, changing hands at $165.11 on the NYSE. That is a $9.15 gain from the prior close of $155.96 and one of the strongest single-session advances for the exchange operator this year. The rally pulls ICE to within roughly 6.2% of its 52-week high of $176.05, a level the stock reached on January 29, 2026. A clean recovery toward that peak now looks within reach.

Volume so far stands at about 832,060 shares, compared with a 90-day average of roughly 3.65 million. With the regular session still open, turnover has reached about 23% of a typical full day's activity.

Why Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. Price is Moving Higher

The driver is ICE's Q3 earnings report, and it delivered on nearly every line that matters. Adjusted diluted EPS came in at $2.02 against a $1.97 consensus, a $0.05 beat and an 18% increase from $1.71 a year earlier. Comparable net revenue after transaction-based expenses reached $2.765 billion, ahead of the roughly $2.746 billion analysts expected and up 14.7% from $2.411 billion in the prior-year quarter. On a gross basis before those expenses, total revenue climbed 20.7% to $3.630 billion from $3.007 billion. This was a company-specific rally rather than a sector-wide one. Financials peers moved higher but trailed ICE's gain, with MasterCard Incorporated (MA) up 4.66% and Visa Inc. (V) rising 2.39%.

The exchange business powered the quarter. Net exchange revenue jumped 22% year over year to $1.542 billion, and net transaction revenue rose 28%, clear evidence that heavier trading activity across ICE's venues is converting directly into revenue. That top-line strength carried through to profitability. Adjusted operating income rose 19% to $1.697 billion, and the adjusted operating margin widened to 61% from 59%, showing that ICE grew revenue faster than costs. Net income attributable to ICE increased 15.2% to $940 million.

Guidance gave investors further reason to buy. Management forecast Q4 operating expenses of $1.317 billion to $1.327 billion, a disciplined range that keeps margin expansion on track. It also reaffirmed 2026 recurring-revenue growth guidance of 9% for Exchanges and 8% for Fixed Income and Data Services. Together, the results and the outlook showed that stronger market activity is lifting ICE's earnings power, and the stock is being repriced accordingly.

What is the Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. Rating - Should I Buy?

Weiss Ratings assigns ICE a B- rating. Current recommendation is Buy. The rating reflects a business with top-tier fundamentals across the board, held just short of the B tier by the more measured experience shareholders have had with the stock itself.

The fundamental case is about as strong as it gets. ICE is rated Excellent on the Growth Index, and the third quarter shows why. Adjusted EPS rose 18% and net revenue rose 14.7%, a sharp acceleration from the 4.84% trailing revenue growth figure that suggests the growth trajectory is steepening rather than plateauing. The Excellent rating on the Efficiency Index rests on a 38.24% profit margin and a 61% adjusted operating margin. Those figures reflect the operating leverage of owning critical market infrastructure, where each additional contract traded adds revenue at very little incremental cost. The 14.09% ROE is solid rather than spectacular, because the equity base carries years of large acquisitions in data and mortgage technology. Margins that keep widening show those deals are being integrated profitably. The Excellent Solvency Index rating rounds out the picture: recurring revenue and cash generation of this scale give ICE ample capacity to service its obligations while continuing to invest.

Where the picture becomes more nuanced is in the market-facing measures, each rated Fair. The Fair Total Return Index rating reflects a stock that has spent much of 2026 below its January peak of $176.05. Today's earnings-driven surge narrows that gap meaningfully but does not close it. The Volatility Index is not rated higher for a related reason: a near-6% one-day jump on an earnings beat is a larger swing than investors typically expect from an exchange operator, even when the move runs in their favor. The Fair Dividend Index rating fits a 1.31% yield, which is modest next to the company's earnings power and reflects a capital return policy that has favored reinvestment and debt reduction over a rich payout. At a forward P/E of 22.03 on trailing EPS of $7.08, ICE is not priced as a bargain, but the latest quarter makes a credible case that the premium is earned.

Within the Financials sector, Intercontinental Exchange is on par with American Express Company (AXP, B-) and BlackRock, Inc. (BLK, B-). It sits a notch below Visa Inc. (V, B), MasterCard Incorporated (MA, B), and Morgan Stanley (MS, B), whose stronger readings on the market-facing measures give them a modest edge. If ICE extends today's rebound toward its January high, the Total Return Index rating has room to improve.

About Intercontinental Exchange, Inc.

Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. (ICE) is a Financials company and one of the world's largest operators of exchanges, clearing houses, and market data networks. Founded in 2000 and headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, ICE runs the New York Stock Exchange, the most prominent equity listing venue in the world, alongside a global futures franchise anchored by ICE Futures Europe. That platform hosts the Brent crude oil benchmark and a deep complex of energy, interest rate, and agricultural contracts. ICE's clearing houses sit at the center of those markets, managing counterparty risk and collecting fees on the volume that flows through them.

Beyond trading, ICE has built a large recurring-revenue business through its Fixed Income and Data Services segment. That segment supplies pricing and reference data, index services, analytics, and connectivity to asset managers, banks, and other institutions worldwide. Its Mortgage Technology segment, built largely through the acquisitions of Ellie Mae and Black Knight, provides the Encompass loan origination platform and mortgage servicing software. Together these tools digitize the U.S. home lending process from application through servicing, a market long dominated by paper-heavy workflows.

ICE's competitive advantages come from network effects and switching costs. Liquidity attracts more liquidity, so benchmark contracts like Brent are extraordinarily difficult for rivals to dislodge, and the NYSE brand remains a powerful draw for listings. On the data and technology side, deeply embedded workflows and long-term subscription relationships produce predictable, sticky revenue that cushions the company when trading activity slows. This mix of cyclical transaction income and steady recurring revenue gives ICE a durable, diversified earnings base that few exchange operators can match.

Investor Outlook

Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. (ICE) carries a Weiss Rating of B- (Buy), and a quarter featuring 22% exchange revenue growth and an expanding 61% adjusted operating margin gives the rally solid fundamental footing. Investors should watch whether Q4 expenses land inside the $1.317 billion to $1.327 billion guided range, whether trading activity keeps transaction revenue climbing, and whether the stock can reclaim its 52-week high of $176.05.
