Lam Research Corporation (LRCX) Down 4.7% — Is It Time to Call It Quits?

  • LRCX fell 4.74% to $286.83 from $301.11 the previous trading day
  • Weiss Ratings assigns B- (Buy)
  • Market cap is $376.82B with a dividend yield of 0.37%

Lam Research Corporation (LRCX) took a sharp hit on Wednesday, closing at $286.83 on the NASDAQ —  a $14.28 decline from the prior close of $301.11. The loss deepens a pullback that has been building for months. LRCX now sits roughly 34.6% below its 52-week high of $438.50, reached on June 30, 2026. Giving back more than a third of its value in about three and a half months is a meaningful reset for a stock that had been one of the clearest beneficiaries of the AI infrastructure buildout.

Volume came in at roughly 6.75 million shares, well below the 90-day average of about 10.55 million. The decline played out on about 64% of normal turnover, so the selling was steady but not a rush for the exits.

Why Lam Research Corporation Price is Moving Lower

The driver was sector-wide rather than company-specific. Semiconductor stocks sold off broadly on Wednesday. The iShares Semiconductor ETF fell 4.56% and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped more than 3.5%, which puts Lam's 4.74% decline squarely in line with the group. Peers took similar damage. Applied Materials, Inc. (AMAT) fell 3.79%, and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) dropped 5.73%. When the closest equipment competitor and the broader chip index move this closely with LRCX, the stock is trading with its sector rather than on its own news.

The macro trigger was inflation. U.S. September CPI came in at 3.7% year over year, up from 3.4% in August and above the 3.6% forecast. That hotter-than-expected print revived concern about interest rates staying higher for longer and about the cost of financing the AI infrastructure projects that have powered equipment demand. Lingering doubts about the durability of AI spending and rising competition from Chinese chipmakers added to the pressure. Lam is especially exposed to that combination because its revenue depends on chipmakers' willingness to keep committing capital to new fab capacity.

Lam's own operating results give little support to the selling. The company's latest quarter, reported on July 29, beat expectations on both lines. Non-GAAP EPS came in at $1.82 against a $1.69 estimate, up from $1.33 a year earlier. Revenue of $6.72 billion topped the $6.66 billion consensus and grew 30% year over year. Management guided for September-quarter revenue of $8.1 billion, plus or minus $400 million, and EPS of $2.15, plus or minus $0.15. That outlook faces its first real test when Lam reports on October 21, 2026. With the stock already well off its highs and macro sentiment souring, that release will matter more than usual.

What is the Lam Research Corporation Rating - Should I Sell?

Weiss Ratings assigns LRCX a B- rating. Current recommendation is Buy. The rating reflects a business with exceptional operating quality whose stock has been more volatile than its fundamentals alone would suggest. The B- sits at the lower end of Buy territory, which signals a favorable but not unqualified risk/reward profile.

The company's strengths are concentrated in its fundamentals, where it is rated Excellent on the Growth, Efficiency and Solvency indices. Revenue growth of 29.99% supports the Growth Index rating, an impressive pace for a company with a market cap above $375 billion. It also confirms that Lam is capturing a large share of the spending on AI-related memory and logic capacity. The Excellent Efficiency Index rating rests on a 65.07% ROE and a 31.27% profit margin. Those figures stand out for an equipment maker that has to fund heavy R&D and support a global installed base. Lam converts that spending into returns most hardware companies cannot match. The Excellent Solvency rating suggests the balance sheet can absorb a cyclical slowdown in orders without strain.

The picture becomes more nuanced on the market-facing measures. LRCX is rated Good on the Total Return Index. That rating credits the substantial gains holders captured during the run to June's $438.50 peak, while the roughly 34.6% retreat since then keeps it from reaching Excellent. The Fair Volatility Index is the weakest link and the clearest reason the overall rating stops at B-. Today's 4.74% drop came from an inflation surprise and a sector-wide selloff, not from anything Lam reported. That illustrates how heavily the stock moves with macro sentiment and broader AI spending expectations. A forward P/E of 52.26 adds to that sensitivity, because a valuation priced for sustained growth leaves less cushion when rate fears return. The Good Dividend Index rating reflects a payout comfortably covered by $5.76 in EPS. Still, the 0.37% yield makes income a secondary consideration for most holders.

Within the Information Technology sector, Lam Research is on par with Applied Materials, Inc. (AMAT, B-) and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD, B-). It trails NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA, B+), Micron Technology, Inc. (MU, B+) and Broadcom Inc. (AVGO, B), which carry stronger risk/reward profiles in Weiss's framework.

About Lam Research Corporation

Lam Research Corporation (LRCX) is an Information Technology company that designs, manufactures and services the wafer fabrication equipment that chipmakers use to build integrated circuits. Founded in 1980 and headquartered in Fremont, California, Lam is a leading supplier of etch and deposition systems, two of the most critical and repeated steps in semiconductor manufacturing. Its customers include the world's major memory makers, foundries and logic manufacturers. Its systems are especially important in producing 3D NAND, advanced DRAM and leading-edge logic chips.

The product portfolio spans the core process steps. In etch, the Kiyo and Flex product families handle conductor and dielectric etching, and the Sense.i platform reflects Lam's push toward denser, more productive tool designs. In deposition, the company offers the VECTOR line for plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition, the ALTUS family for tungsten deposition, Striker for atomic layer deposition, and SABRE electroplating systems used in copper interconnects and advanced packaging. Lam's single-wafer clean products round out its process coverage. Its Customer Support Business Group provides spare parts, upgrades and services to the large installed base of Lam tools in fabs worldwide, which generates recurring revenue.

Lam's competitive advantages come from deep process expertise in high-aspect-ratio etching, which has become essential as memory makers stack ever more layers in 3D NAND. Long-standing engineering relationships with chipmakers also help, because Lam's tools are qualified into production processes that customers are reluctant to change. Transitions to gate-all-around transistors, backside power delivery and advanced packaging for AI accelerators all add etch and deposition steps, which expands Lam's addressable market as chip designs grow more complex. That position does not insulate the company from the cyclical nature of fab spending or from shifts in export rules that affect sales into China.

Investor Outlook

Lam Research Corporation (LRCX) carries a Weiss Rating of B- (Buy). Its operating fundamentals remain strong, but rising inflation, rate concerns and AI spending doubts argue for patience rather than aggressive buying while the sector is under pressure. Investors should watch the October 21 report for delivery against the $8.1 billion revenue and $2.15 EPS guidance, and for any change in management's tone on AI-driven equipment demand and China exposure.
