MACOM Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc. (MTSI) Up 6.1% — Do I Enter Before the Next Push?

  • MTSI rose 6.14% to $301.72 from $284.27 the previous trading day
  • Weiss Ratings assigns C (Hold)
  • Market cap is $21.71B

MACOM Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc. (MTSI) is pulling away from the semiconductor pack this Thursday, currently changing hands at $301.72 on the NASDAQ. That is a $17.45 gain over the prior close of $284.27 and puts the stock back above the $300 mark. Even after the advance, MTSI sits roughly 28.0% below its 52-week high of $418.90, set on May 27, 2026, which leaves substantial ground to recover for a company whose fundamentals have kept improving since that peak.

Volume so far stands at about 546,245 shares, against a 90-day average of roughly 1.55 million. With the regular session still open, turnover is running at about 35% of a typical full day while the price has already moved more than 6%.

Why MACOM Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc. Price is Moving Higher

Today's rally belongs to MACOM, not the broader chip group. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index finished essentially flat, down 0.004%, and the larger names posted modest gains, with Marvell Technology, Inc. (MRVL) up 1.04% and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) up 0.61%. AI-related technology stocks did get a lift from renewed enthusiasm after Micron's (MU) results, which put Nvidia (NVDA), AMD, and Broadcom (AVGO) in the green in early trading. That backdrop helped, but MTSI's 6.14% gain is several times what its larger peers managed. Investors are paying a premium specifically for MACOM's exposure to AI networking.

That exposure became much more concrete on September 17, when MACOM introduced a 3.2-terabit optical chipset for AI and cloud data centers. The chipset combines eight 448-gigabit-per-second channels and is already available, so it ties the company directly to one of the fastest-growing bottlenecks in AI infrastructure: moving data between accelerators at ever-higher speeds. A day later, on September 18, BMO upgraded MTSI to Outperform from Market Perform and kept its $335 price target, citing data-center growth and resilient defense demand. That target still implies about 11% upside from today's price.

The financial results support the story. MACOM's most recent quarter, reported on August 6, delivered adjusted EPS of $1.40 against a $1.35 estimate. Revenue came in at $342.2 million versus the $336 million consensus, up 35.8% year over year. Adjusted gross margin expanded to 59.7% from 57.6% a year earlier, which shows the growth is coming with better pricing and mix rather than at the expense of profitability. Management's fiscal Q4 guidance stands out most: revenue of $415 million to $425 million and adjusted EPS of $1.97 to $2.03. That forecast signals a meaningful step up in scale, and together with a newly available AI-optics platform, it gives the market a clear reason to reprice the stock.

What is the MACOM Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc. Rating - Should I Buy?

Weiss Ratings assigns MTSI a C rating. Current recommendation is Hold. That rating reflects a business with first-rate operating momentum and balance sheet strength, offset by a stock whose recent performance and price swings have not yet matched the quality of the underlying company.

The fundamental case starts with the Excellent rating on the Growth Index. Revenue growth of 35.77% is exceptional for a company of MACOM's size, and the guidance toward $415 million to $425 million in quarterly revenue suggests the expansion is accelerating rather than peaking. The Excellent Solvency Index adds important support. A balance sheet in that condition gives MACOM room to keep funding the R&D needed to stay competitive in 448-gigabit-per-second optics without leaning on outside capital. The Efficiency Index is rated Good, backed by a 20.69% profit margin and a 17.18% ROE. Those are healthy returns for an analog and mixed-signal chipmaker still investing heavily in next-generation data-center products. Further gross margin gains like the move to 59.7% could lift efficiency further as revenue scales.

Where the picture becomes more nuanced is in the market-facing indices. MTSI is rated Fair on both the Total Return Index and the Volatility Index, and the same price history explains both. The stock still trades about 28% below its May 2026 high of $418.90 despite strong earnings, so holders who bought near the peak are underwater. Today's 6.14% jump on AI-optics enthusiasm is welcome, but sharp single-day repricings are exactly why the Volatility Index is not rated higher. Valuation adds to the caution: a forward P/E of 91.15 builds in considerable optimism, leaving little room for missteps in execution.

Within the Information Technology sector, MACOM is on par with Marvell Technology, Inc. (MRVL, C) and QUALCOMM Incorporated (QCOM, C). It sits just behind Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD, C+) and ahead of Intel Corporation (INTC, C-). Given that MACOM pairs Excellent Growth and Solvency ratings with faster top-line expansion than most of that group, any improvement in total return and stability would put it in a strong position to move up the rankings.

About MACOM Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc.

MACOM Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc. (MTSI) is an Information Technology company in the Semiconductors and Semiconductor Equipment industry. Headquartered in Lowell, Massachusetts, it designs and manufactures analog, mixed-signal, RF, microwave, millimeter-wave, and optical semiconductor products. Its customers span three core end markets: data center, telecommunications, and industrial and defense. That mix gives MACOM a high-growth engine in cloud and AI networking alongside steadier, longer-cycle demand from aerospace and defense programs.

In the data center, MACOM supplies the high-speed analog components that sit inside optical transceivers and active cables connecting servers, switches, and AI accelerators. These include transimpedance amplifiers, laser and modulator drivers, and clock and data recovery chips. Its newly launched 3.2-terabit optical chipset, built on eight 448-gigabit-per-second channels, extends that portfolio to the next generation of AI cluster bandwidth. In telecom and defense, MACOM offers gallium-nitride power amplifiers, monolithic microwave integrated circuits, switches, diodes, and other RF components used in radar, communications infrastructure, and electronic warfare systems.

MACOM's competitive edge comes from deep analog and RF design expertise accumulated over decades, combined with its own semiconductor fabrication capabilities, including compound semiconductor processes that many fabless rivals cannot easily match. Its ability to serve both hyperscale data-center customers and defense contractors also diversifies its revenue across cycles. And because optical interconnect speeds must keep rising as AI models scale, MACOM's specialized know-how becomes more valuable with each new bandwidth generation.

Investor Outlook

MACOM Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc. (MTSI) carries a Weiss Rating of C (Hold), backed by Excellent growth and solvency and a clear foothold in AI optical networking. Investors should watch whether fiscal Q4 results land within the $415 million to $425 million revenue guidance, how quickly the 3.2-terabit chipset turns into volume orders, and whether the stock can extend toward BMO's $335 target and recover more of its 2026 high.
