Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) Down 5.3% — Time to Hit Pause on This Stock?

  • META fell 5.26% to $596.87 from $630.00 the previous trading day
  • Weiss Ratings assigns B- (Buy)
  • Market cap is $1.59T with a dividend yield of 0.34%

Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) is under heavy pressure this Thursday, last trading at $596.87 on the NASDAQ —  down $33.13 from the prior close of $630.00. The decline pushes the stock below the $600 mark and roughly 23.5% under its 52-week high of $779.82, set on September 24, 2026. That high came only six weeks ago. Since then, nearly a quarter of the stock's value has disappeared, and today's drop deepens a pullback that was already well underway.

Volume stands at roughly 7.17 million shares so far, against a 90-day average of about 20.40 million. Turnover is running well below a typical full session with the regular session still open. Today's decline has come on relatively light participation so far.

Why Meta Platforms, Inc. Price is Moving Lower

Today's drop looks mostly specific to Meta, layered on top of broader weakness in large-cap tech. As of 3:17 p.m., META was down 5.18% while the Communication Services sector was down 2.08%. Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) was down 2.89%. Meta is falling more than twice as fast as its group, which points to a concern unique to the company.

That concern traces to comments from Meta president Dina Powell McCormick. She said new U.S. data-center projects would face more scrutiny and be "very challenging" after the midterm elections. She noted that expanding existing sites may be easier and that hyperscalers were considering building overseas. For a company betting heavily on AI, that is a practical risk. Delays or limits on new facilities could complicate Meta's effort to secure the computing power its plans require. The market is pricing the possibility that the bottleneck is not money but permits and politics.

The comments land on a cost debate that was already sensitive. Meta's Q3 report on October 21 was strong on the top line. Revenue was $64.60 billion, up 26% year over year and ahead of the roughly $63.34 billion consensus. Adjusted EPS of $7.40 beat the $6.52 estimate, though GAAP EPS was $3.83 after a $9.89 billion legal charge. The spending side drew more attention. Free cash flow came in at negative $2.12 billion, and 2026 capital-spending guidance stands at $135 billion to $145 billion. On October 30, S&P kept Meta's AA- credit rating but revised its outlook to negative, citing uncertainty around spending and cash flow. Investors had already been weighing whether that spending would pay off. Today's remarks add the question of whether Meta can even deploy it on schedule.

What is the Meta Platforms, Inc. Rating - Should I Sell?

Weiss Ratings assigns META a B- rating. Current recommendation is Buy. That rating reflects a business whose operating fundamentals remain among the strongest in large-cap tech, partly offset by a stock that has turned choppy as investors reassess the cost of the AI buildout.

The core of the business remains strong. Meta is rated Excellent on the Growth Index, a fair reading for a company of this size still growing revenue at 26.07% year over year. That pace stands out for a platform already reaching billions of users, and the third-quarter beat confirmed the advertising engine is still gaining momentum. The Excellent Efficiency Index rating rests on a 32.26% ROE and a 31.14% profit margin. Those figures hold up even as capital spending climbs into the hundreds of billions, which shows how much earnings power the core ad business carries. The Excellent Solvency Index rating fits with S&P keeping Meta at AA-. Even so, the move to a negative outlook and the negative $2.12 billion free cash flow print are reasons to watch that rating closely rather than take it for granted.

Where the picture becomes more nuanced is the market-facing side. Meta is rated Fair on the Total Return Index, which reflects a stock trading roughly 23.5% below its September high despite strong earnings. The Fair Volatility Index rating reflects sessions like today, when comments about data-center permitting knocked more than 5% off a $1.59 trillion company. The Dividend Index is also rated Fair, consistent with a 0.34% yield that is a small part of the shareholder case. These ratings keep Meta at B- rather than higher. The business is executing well, but holders have absorbed meaningful drawdowns along the way. At a forward P/E of 21.18 against trailing EPS of $29.33, the valuation is not stretched. That gives the Buy recommendation some support, but it does not shield the stock from more turbulence tied to spending.

Within the Communication Services sector, META is on par with Roku, Inc. (ROKU, B-). It trails Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL, B), Fox Corporation (FOXA, B), and The New York Times Company (NYT, B), each of which carries a slightly stronger risk/reward profile in Weiss's framework.

About Meta Platforms, Inc.

Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) is a Communication Services company headquartered in Menlo Park, California. Founded in 2004 as Facebook, it operates one of the largest collections of consumer platforms in the world. Its Family of Apps includes Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Threads, which together reach billions of people each day. The company earns the large majority of its revenue from advertising across these platforms, selling targeted placements to businesses of every size around the world.

Alongside its apps, Meta runs Reality Labs, which develops virtual and augmented reality hardware and software. That includes the Meta Quest headset line and the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses made with EssilorLuxottica. Reality Labs has absorbed substantial investment over the years and represents Meta's long-term bet on the next computing platform. More recently, AI has become central to the company's strategy. Meta develops its own Llama family of large language models, deploys the Meta AI assistant across its apps, and builds data-center capacity at scale to train and run these systems.

Meta's competitive advantages come from its enormous user base, the data that base produces, and an advertising system refined over two decades to turn engagement into measurable returns for marketers. Those network effects are difficult for rivals to copy. Owning several leading social and messaging apps also gives Meta multiple paths to monetize attention. The trade-off is heavy capital intensity, as the company commits growing sums to AI infrastructure in pursuit of its next phase of growth.

Investor Outlook

Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) carries a Weiss Rating of B- (Buy), backed by excellent growth, efficiency, and solvency, though the stock's recent drawdown argues for measured position sizing rather than chasing a rebound. Investors should watch for any clarification on how Meta plans to secure data-center capacity after the midterms, whether free cash flow recovers from the negative $2.12 billion Q3 figure, and whether S&P's negative outlook turns into an actual rating change.
