Monster Beverage Corporation (MNST) Down 4.8% — Time to Fold This Position?
Monster Beverage Corporation (MNST) is under pressure on Friday, currently trading at $45.55 on the NASDAQ. That is a $2.28 decline from the prior close of $47.83 and gives back a meaningful slice of the stock's recent strength. Even after the drop, MNST sits roughly 9.2% below its 52-week high of $50.17, set on July 17, 2026. That proximity shows how well the shares held up through most of the year, and it also means investors entered the earnings report with high expectations.
Volume so far stands at about 3.50 million shares, compared with a 90-day average of roughly 10.28 million. With the session still open, turnover is tracking at about a third of a typical full day, so the selling has been decisive in price rather than heavy in volume.
Why Monster Beverage Corporation Price is Moving Lower
The decline traces directly to Monster's Q3 results, released on November 5. The top line was strong, but profitability did not keep pace. Revenue reached $2.56 billion, ahead of the $2.48 billion consensus and up 16.7% from $2.20 billion a year earlier. Adjusted EPS of $0.30 only matched the $0.30 estimate, rising 8.5% from $0.28. That gap between sales growth and earnings growth is the core problem. Gross margin slipped to 54.7% from 55.7%, and operating margin fell to 28.0% from 30.7%. Management attributed the squeeze to higher aluminum-can and freight costs and a less favorable geographic sales mix. Net income rose 8.4% to $568.4 million, about half the rate of revenue growth. For a stock trading at 45.15 times forward earnings, that kind of operating deleverage is hard for investors to overlook.
The earnings call did little to ease the margin concern. International sales grew 28.1% and now make up 47% of total sales, up from 43% a year earlier. That expansion is strategically valuable, but it is the same mix shift management identified as a drag on margins. Management also said aluminum costs are expected to rise modestly through at least Q1 2027, which pushes the cost headwind into the next several reporting periods. A U.S. price increase that took effect earlier in the month should provide some offset, but investors have not yet seen how much of the cost pressure it absorbs.
The move is specific to Monster rather than a sector-wide retreat. The Coca-Cola Company (KO, A) is up 0.08% today, and Coca-Cola FEMSA, S.A.B. de C.V. (KOF, B+) is off just 0.45%. A drop of nearly 5% against that backdrop points to a reset of margin expectations for Monster in particular, not a broader rotation out of beverage names.
What is the Monster Beverage Corporation Rating - Should I Sell?
Weiss Ratings assigns MNST a B rating. Current recommendation is Buy. Today's decline does not change the underlying quality of the business, but it does test how much of the premium investors are willing to pay when growth stops flowing fully to the bottom line.
The fundamentals remain the foundation of the rating, and they are strong. Monster is rated Excellent on the Growth Index, supported by revenue growth of 20.17%, a pace that few established beverage companies can match. The latest quarter's 28.1% international expansion shows that growth is broadening geographically rather than relying on a mature U.S. market. The Excellent rating on the Efficiency Index draws on a 25.70% ROE and a 23.07% profit margin. Those figures are notable for a company that outsources much of its production and still converts nearly a quarter of revenue into profit despite rising can costs. That same profitability supports the Excellent Solvency Index rating, since a business generating more than half a billion dollars in quarterly net income can fund its expansion without straining its balance sheet. The Excellent Total Return Index rating reflects a stock that reached $50.17 in July and remains within about 9% of that level even after today's selling.
Where the picture becomes more nuanced is the Volatility Index, rated Fair. Today's drop of nearly 5% on an in-line EPS print shows how sharply a richly valued stock can reprice when margins disappoint. It also suggests that more cost pressure through early 2027 could produce similar swings. The Fair rating is the main reason the overall grade stops at B rather than climbing higher. It also signals that new buyers should expect a bumpier ride than the fundamental ratings alone would suggest.
Within the Consumer Staples sector, Monster is on par with Altria Group, Inc. (MO, B). It trails The Coca-Cola Company (KO, A) and Philip Morris International Inc. (PM, A-), both of which pair their fundamentals with steadier price behavior. Coca-Cola FEMSA, S.A.B. de C.V. (KOF, B+) and Coca-Cola Consolidated, Inc. (COKE, B+) also rank slightly ahead, so Monster's growth advantage has not yet translated into a top-tier risk/reward profile within the group.
About Monster Beverage Corporation
Monster Beverage Corporation (MNST) is a Consumer Staples company headquartered in Corona, California that develops, markets, and distributes energy drinks and related beverages around the world. Its flagship Monster Energy brand anchors the portfolio and has expanded into a wide family of offerings, including the zero-sugar Monster Ultra line, Java Monster coffee-based energy drinks, Juice Monster, and Rehab Monster. The company also targets the performance-energy segment with Reign Total Body Fuel and added Bang Energy to its lineup. Its strategic brands portfolio includes Burn, NOS, Full Throttle, Mother, and Predator, many of which serve specific international markets. Monster has also moved into alcoholic beverages through craft beer brands and flavored malt beverages such as The Beast Unleashed.
The company's operating model is relatively asset-light. Monster relies largely on third-party co-packers for production and concentrates its own resources on brand building, product development, and marketing. Its distribution relationship with The Coca-Cola Company, which is also a significant shareholder, gives Monster access to one of the most extensive bottling and distribution networks in the world. That network has been central to its push into Europe, Latin America, Asia, and other international markets, which now account for nearly half of sales.
Monster's competitive advantages come from brand strength built over decades of sponsorships in action sports, motorsports, and music. Those ties have given the Monster name a cultural identity that newer entrants struggle to replicate. Scale in a category where shelf space and cooler placement matter heavily reinforces that position. Still, the business depends on aluminum cans and global freight, so input costs remain a persistent variable, and competition from fast-growing rivals in the energy-drink category continues to intensify.
Investor Outlook
Monster Beverage Corporation (MNST) carries a Weiss Rating of B (Buy), and its growth and profitability remain intact even as the latest quarter exposed real margin pressure at a premium valuation. Investors should watch whether gross margin stabilizes as aluminum costs keep rising through at least Q1 2027, how much the recent U.S. price increase offsets those costs, and whether international expansion can continue without further eroding operating margin.
