Natera, Inc. (NTRA) Down 4.6% — Time to Sell and Move Forward?

  • NTRA fell 4.61% to $406.02 from $425.64 the previous trading day
  • Weiss Ratings assigns D- (Sell)
  • Market cap is $59.15B

Natera, Inc. (NTRA) is buckling under pressure this Tuesday, last changing hands at $406.02 on the NASDAQ —  a $19.62 decline from the prior close of $425.64. The pullback comes just days after the stock set a 52-week high of $427.47 on September 30, 2026, and leaves shares about 5.0% below that peak. Even after today's drop, NTRA trades roughly 153% above its 52-week low of $160.59, which shows how much ground the stock has covered over the past year and how much gain holders now have to protect.

Volume stands at roughly 1.44 million shares so far, close to the 90-day average of about 1.46 million. Turnover is in line with normal levels while the session is still underway, so this is not yet a high-volume exit.

Why Natera, Inc. Price is Moving Lower

The selling looks sector-driven rather than company-specific. Biotech and precision diagnostics names are retreating together. The SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI) was down 3.35% at 10:14 a.m. ET, and diagnostic peer Guardant Health (GH) was down 7.11% by 11:14 a.m. ET. Natera was down 4.93% at 11:53 a.m. ET, a decline that sits between the sector benchmark and its closest diagnostics comparable. Elsewhere in Health Care, Moderna, Inc. (MRNA) is down 6.64% and Revolution Medicines, Inc. (RVMD, D-) is off 3.54%. That breadth points to a risk-off rotation across the group rather than a judgment on Natera alone.

Timing explains part of why Natera is caught in the downdraft. The stock hit its 52-week high less than a week ago, and a name that has more than doubled off its lows is an obvious place to lock in gains when sector sentiment turns. The most recent company news was constructive. On October 5, Natera and Alliance Foundation Trials announced AFT-70 NAVIGATE, a Phase III breast cancer study with Genentech that will test Signatera-guided treatment. The study is expected to enroll more than 2,000 patients at about 200 sites. It is a longer-term opportunity to widen the clinical evidence behind Signatera, but its payoff is years away and does little to shield the stock from near-term sector swings.

The fundamental backdrop remains firm, which supports reading today's decline as profit-taking rather than a reassessment of the business. Natera's Q2 report on August 6 showed revenue of $752.75 million against a $661.24 million consensus, up 37.7% year over year. The loss per share of $0.47 was narrower than the $0.49 loss analysts expected and improved from a $0.74 loss a year earlier. Net loss fell to $67.0 million from $100.9 million. Management raised 2026 revenue guidance to $2.85 billion to $2.91 billion, up from $2.74 billion to $2.82 billion. Those results helped power the run to record levels. The company is still unprofitable, though, and that leaves the shares exposed when investors grow less tolerant of growth-stage valuations.

What is the Natera, Inc. Rating - Should I Sell?

Weiss Ratings assigns NTRA a D- rating. The rating was upgraded on 12/26/2023. Current recommendation is Sell. The upgrade nearly three years ago moved Natera off a lower rung, but the D- rating still signals that the risk profile outweighs the strengths. That holds even after a year in which the stock has handsomely rewarded holders.

The strongest parts of the profile are real. The Excellent rating on the Solvency Index indicates a balance sheet that can fund continued losses without forcing the company into distressed financing, and that matters for a business still spending ahead of profitability. The Good rating on the Growth Index rests on 37.71% revenue growth and an 8.1% sequential gain from $696.64 million in the first quarter to $752.75 million in the second. That is unusually brisk expansion for a diagnostics company of Natera's scale, and the raised full-year guidance suggests demand for Signatera and the women's health franchise is holding up. The Good rating on the Total Return Index reflects a stock that has climbed from $160.59 to within striking distance of $430 over the past year.

The weaknesses carry more weight in the overall rating. Natera is rated Very Weak on the Efficiency Index. A -7.10% profit margin and trailing EPS of -$1.37 show a company that has not yet turned rapid revenue growth into earnings, even as losses narrow. The forward P/E of -300.58 shows that profitability remains a projection rather than a result, and investors at a $59.15 billion market cap are paying for an earnings stream that does not yet exist. The Fair rating on the Volatility Index fits a stock whose 52-week range spans more than $260 per share. Today's sector-wide biotech pullback shows how quickly gains can reverse when sentiment shifts. The Volatility Index is not rated higher because NTRA moves sharply with the broader group even when its own fundamentals are improving.

Within the Health Care sector, Natera sits alongside Moderna, Inc. (MRNA, D-), Revolution Medicines, Inc. (RVMD, D-), and Roivant Sciences Ltd. (ROIV, D-). It ranks just below Zoetis Inc. (ZTS, D). The clustering of low ratings among growth-oriented biotech and life sciences names shows Weiss's caution toward companies whose valuations depend on future profitability.

About Natera, Inc.

Natera, Inc. (NTRA) is a Health Care company focused on developing and commercializing molecular testing services worldwide. Founded in 2003 as Gene Security Network and renamed in 2012, the Austin, Texas-based company has built its business on cell-free DNA technology. Oncology has become its most closely watched growth engine. Signatera, a personalized circulating tumor DNA blood test, is used for molecular residual disease assessment, early recurrence monitoring, and gauging treatment response in patients previously diagnosed with cancer. Latitude extends blood-based MRD testing to colorectal cancer, Altera provides tissue-based comprehensive genomic profiling, and Empower covers hereditary cancer screening.

Women's health remains the foundation of the franchise. The Panorama non-invasive prenatal test and the Horizon carrier screening test are long-established products. They are complemented by Fetal Focus and Vistara, single-gene NIPTs that screen for 21 and 25 inherited conditions respectively, and by Anora, which analyzes miscarriage tissue for women who have experienced pregnancy loss. Natera also has a presence in organ health through Prospera, which assesses active rejection in solid organ transplant patients, and Renasight, a kidney gene panel test.

The company sells to independent and reference laboratories, medical centers, physician practices, research labs, and pharmaceutical companies through a direct sales force and distribution partners. Its Constellation cloud-based software lets licensees run Natera's analytics on their own operations. Supporting infrastructure, including the NateraCore patient and provider platform, phlebotomy services, and EMR integration, helps embed its tests in clinical workflows. Partnerships with BGI Genomics on NGS-based assays and with Diakonos Oncology on melanoma response monitoring broaden the company's reach. Its competitive advantage rests on a growing body of clinical data across several specialties, which is hard for newer entrants to replicate quickly.

Investor Outlook

Natera, Inc. (NTRA) carries a Weiss Rating of D- (Sell). Strong revenue growth and a solid balance sheet are not yet enough to offset persistent losses and a stock that swings sharply with biotech sentiment. Investors should watch whether the Q3 report keeps revenue on pace with the raised $2.85 billion to $2.91 billion guidance and continues to narrow losses. They should also track whether the XBI and diagnostics peers stabilize after this pullback. See full rankings of all D- rated Health Care stocks inside the Weiss Stock Screener.
