Natera, Inc. (NTRA) Down 5.6% — Should I Get Rid of This Name?
Natera, Inc. (NTRA) is giving back ground on Friday, last trading at $411.60 on the NASDAQ — a $24.40 decline from the prior close of $436.00. The pullback comes just as the stock was pressing against its 52-week high of $437.41, set on October 6, 2026, and it now sits about 5.9% below that peak. The longer view is very different. The stock remains roughly 127% above its 52-week low of $181.00, which shows how much ground it has covered over the past year and how much of that gain is exposed when sentiment shifts.
Turnover is running lighter than usual, with about 992,407 shares traded so far against a 90-day average of roughly 1.48 million. Today's decline has not come with a surge of selling volume.
Why Natera, Inc. Price is Moving Lower
Today's slide looks most like profit-taking after a sharp run, made worse by a broad risk-off session. Natera climbed from $404.90 to $436.00 between October 26 and October 29, a gain of about 7.7% in three sessions that carried the stock to within striking distance of its high. Friday's market gave holders a reason to lock in those gains. Around midday, the Nasdaq was down 2.65%, the S&P 500 was off 1.64%, and the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI) had fallen 1.65%. Natera's drop is more than three times the size of the Biotech benchmark's, so a stock-specific pullback is layered on top of the market weakness. Among Health Care peers, IQVIA Holdings Inc. (IQV) fell 4.12%, while Moderna, Inc. (MRNA) slipped a more modest 1.27%.
Valuation and the upcoming earnings date are the likely reasons that extra selling found Natera in particular. Natera will report Q3 results on November 5 after the close, with a conference call at 4:30 p.m. ET. A stock that has more than doubled off its 52-week low leaves little margin for error heading into that report. On October 27, BTIG raised its price target to $430 from $320 and kept its Buy rating. Even after a target increase of that size, the stock was trading above the new figure at Thursday's $436.00 close, which leaves the shares priced ahead of even bullish analyst expectations.
The fundamentals behind the run are strong, and that strength sets a high bar for November 5. Natera's Q2 revenue, reported on August 6, came in at $752.8 million, up 37.7% year over year and well above the $661.26 million analyst forecast. The GAAP loss narrowed to $0.47 per share from $0.74, and the net loss fell to $67.0 million from $100.9 million. Management also raised 2026 revenue guidance to between $2.85 billion and $2.91 billion. Investors now want to see that momentum continue in the third quarter. Natera remains unprofitable, with trailing EPS of -$1.37, so the valuation rests on growth staying at this pace.
What is the Natera, Inc. Rating - Should I Sell?
Weiss Ratings assigns NTRA a D- rating. The rating was upgraded on 12/26/2023. Current recommendation is Sell. That rating can look out of step with a stock trading near its highs. It reflects a business that has not yet shown it can turn rapid growth into consistent profits, and it suggests caution even after the gains shareholders have enjoyed.
Several of the sub-index ratings are genuinely strong. Natera is rated Excellent on the Total Return Index, and the reason is visible in the price. A climb from $181.00 to within a few dollars of $437.41 over the past year is the kind of performance few Health Care names can match. The Excellent Solvency Index rating means the balance sheet can carry continued losses without forcing the company to scale back investment. That matters for a diagnostics company still spending heavily to win oncology and transplant testing volume. The Growth Index is rated Good, backed by 37.71% revenue growth and a sequential climb from $696.64 million in the first quarter to $752.75 million in the second. Growth at that rate is unusual for a company already approaching $3 billion in annual sales. It falls short of Excellent largely because earnings growth remains in negative territory.
Where the picture becomes more troubling is on profitability. The Very Weak rating on the Efficiency Index reflects a -7.10% profit margin. After years of scaling Signatera and Panorama, Natera still loses money on its revenue base, even as the gap has narrowed. A forward P/E of -319.37 makes the same point: the market is paying for profits that have not yet appeared. The Volatility Index is rated Fair. Today's 5.6% retreat, coming right after a 7.7% three-session advance, shows how quickly the shares swing when a hot stock meets a weak market. That two-way movement is why the Volatility Index is not rated higher.
Within the Health Care sector, Natera sits alongside Moderna, Inc. (MRNA, D-), Revolution Medicines, Inc. (RVMD, D-), and Roivant Sciences Ltd. (ROIV, D-). It trails IQVIA Holdings Inc. (IQV, D+) and Zoetis Inc. (ZTS, D+), both of which carry slightly better risk/reward profiles in Weiss's framework. Even those stronger peers sit in Sell territory, which points to broad caution across this part of the Health Care universe.
About Natera, Inc.
Natera, Inc. (NTRA) is a Health Care company that develops and commercializes molecular testing services worldwide. Founded in 2003 as Gene Security Network and renamed in 2012, the Austin, Texas-based company has grown into a leader in cell-free DNA testing across three areas: oncology, women's health, and organ health. Its most important growth driver is Signatera, a personalized circulating tumor DNA blood test used to detect minimal residual disease, catch cancer recurrence early, and monitor how patients respond to treatment. The oncology portfolio also includes Latitude, a blood-based MRD test for colorectal cancer, Altera, a tissue-based comprehensive genomic profiling test, and Empower, a hereditary cancer screening test.
In women's health, Panorama is Natera's flagship non-invasive prenatal test. It sits alongside the Horizon carrier screening test and the single-gene prenatal screens Fetal Focus and Vistara, which cover 21 and 25 inherited conditions, respectively. Anora analyzes miscarriage tissue for women who have experienced pregnancy loss. On the organ health side, Prospera assesses active rejection in solid organ transplant patients, and Renasight is a kidney gene panel test. Natera supports these offerings with the NateraCore patient and provider platform, phlebotomy services, EMR integration, and its cloud-based Constellation software. Constellation lets licensed laboratories run Natera's analytics on their own instruments.
The company sells to independent and reference laboratories, medical centers, physician practices, research laboratories, and pharmaceutical companies through its direct sales force and laboratory distribution partners. It also holds a partnership with BGI Genomics to develop and commercialize NGS-based genetic testing assays. Natera's main competitive advantages are the clinical data it has built up behind Signatera and Panorama, its scale in cell-free DNA testing, and its reach across several specialties. Those strengths are hard for newer entrants to replicate. Even so, reimbursement decisions, pricing pressure, and competition in MRD testing remain ongoing risks.
Investor Outlook
Natera, Inc. (NTRA) carries a Weiss Rating of D- (Sell). Today's pullback from near its high points to how much optimism is already built into the shares ahead of the November 5 Q3 report. Investors should watch whether revenue keeps tracking toward the raised $2.85 billion to $2.91 billion guidance and whether losses keep narrowing, since profitability is what the Very Weak Efficiency Index rating says is still missing.
