Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. - Petrobras (PBRA) Up 14.9% — Should I Make My Move Here?

  • PBRA rose 14.87% to $22.51 from $19.60 the previous trading day
  • Weiss Ratings assigns B- (Buy)
  • Market cap is $134.05B with a dividend yield of 6.05%

Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. - Petrobras (PBRA) is surging on Monday, changing hands at $22.51 on the NYSE —  a $2.91 gain over the prior close of $19.60. The move pushes the preferred shares into new territory. PBRA is now trading roughly 12.3% above its previous 52-week high of $20.05, set on May 4, 2026. That level capped the stock for five months, and the market cleared it in a single session.

Volume is running heavy at roughly 20.60 million shares, compared with a 90-day average of about 7.55 million. That is nearly 2.7 times normal turnover, with the session still open.

Why Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. - Petrobras Price is Moving Higher

The driver is Brazil's presidential election. In the first round on October 4, Flávio Bolsonaro won 47.03% of the vote against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's 45.16%. Polls had put Lula about three points ahead, so the result was a clear upset, and the two candidates now advance to an October 25 runoff. Investors read Bolsonaro's stronger-than-expected showing as raising the odds of tighter public spending, privatizations and a more market-oriented policy approach. For state-controlled Petrobras, that translates directly into reduced concern about government influence over pricing, capital allocation and dividends. That overhang has long kept a discount on the shares.

The repricing is market-wide. Reuters reported the Bovespa up more than 8% in early trading on Monday, the Brazilian real up more than 4%, and the Frankfurt-listed MSCI Brazil ETF up more than 14%. Petrobras preferred shares were up 11.38% at the U.S. open and have extended gains since. The company's common ADR, Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. - Petrobras (PBR), is up 14.02% today. The contrast with global oil majors confirms this is a Brazil story rather than a crude-price story. ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation (XOM) is down 0.08%, and Chevron Corporation (CVX) is off 0.16%.

Company news gave the rally a firm footing. On October 2, Petrobras disclosed a second oil-bearing interval at the Morpho well, located 2,886 metres underwater off the coast of Amapá. The find adds to the case for the company's frontier exploration program. The operating backdrop is equally strong. Second-quarter results released August 6 showed net revenue of R$169.5 billion against R$160.4 billion expected, up 42.3% year over year. Net profit nearly doubled, rising 96% to R$52.4 billion. In dollar terms, EPS came in at $1.38 versus a $1.25 estimate, and revenue reached $31.26 billion against a $30.15 billion consensus. With a forward P/E of just 9.92 and earnings growing at that pace, a reduced political risk premium leaves considerable room for the valuation to expand.

What is the Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. - Petrobras Rating - Should I Buy?

Weiss Ratings assigns PBRA a B- rating. Current recommendation is Buy. The rating reflects a company whose operating engine is firing at full strength, held just short of a higher grade by the price swings that come with Brazilian political exposure.

The fundamental case is exceptional. The Excellent rating on the Growth Index is backed by 59.64% revenue growth, a striking figure for a producer of Petrobras's scale. It reflects rising output from its deepwater pre-salt fields rather than a one-off pricing windfall. Efficiency is also rated Excellent, and the numbers show why. A 30.64% ROE and a 24.46% profit margin are rare for an integrated oil company carrying refining and distribution operations alongside upstream production. They point to the low lifting costs of its offshore asset base. The Good rating on the Solvency Index adds balance-sheet support. Petrobras has the financial capacity to fund its exploration pipeline while sustaining a 6.05% dividend yield, which places it among the most generous income names in the space.

Where the picture becomes more nuanced is in the market-facing measures. Both the Total Return Index and the Volatility Index are rated Fair. Today's 14.87% jump on election results shows exactly why volatility is not rated higher. The same political sensitivity that is lifting the stock today can just as easily weigh on it, and the October 25 runoff ensures that sensitivity stays in play for the next three weeks. The Fair Total Return rating reflects how long PBRA spent pinned below its $20.05 high despite record profits. Today's breakout is the kind of move that could begin to close that gap.

Within the Energy sector, PBRA's rating matches Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. - Petrobras (PBR, B-) and ConocoPhillips (COP, B-), which is up 1.39% today. It sits a notch below ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation (XOM, B), Chevron Corporation (CVX, B) and Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC, B). That positioning is worth noting. None of those peers can match PBRA's growth rate or dividend yield, and its gap to the B-rated names comes from political and currency risk rather than any shortfall in the underlying business.

About Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. - Petrobras

Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. - Petrobras (PBRA) is an Energy company and Brazil's dominant integrated oil and gas producer. Founded in 1953 and headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, the company is controlled by the Brazilian federal government. PBRA represents its preferred shares listed in New York, while PBR represents its common shares. Petrobras operates across exploration and production, refining, transportation and marketing, and gas and power. That integrated footprint stretches from offshore wellheads to the fuel pump.

The upstream business is the crown jewel. Petrobras is a global leader in ultra-deepwater production, and its pre-salt fields in the Santos and Campos basins, including the giant Búzios and Tupi reservoirs, rank among the most productive and lowest-cost offshore assets in the world. The company is also pushing into new frontiers along Brazil's Equatorial Margin, where the recent Morpho discovery off Amapá sits. Downstream, Petrobras runs the bulk of Brazil's refining capacity. Its refineries turn out diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, liquefied petroleum gas, naphtha and fuel oil for the domestic market, and the company also exports crude oil to buyers in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Its natural gas operations supply thermal power generation and industrial customers across Brazil.

Petrobras's competitive advantages rest on decades of deepwater engineering expertise, a dominant position in one of the world's largest and fastest-growing offshore oil provinces, and an integrated refining and logistics network that rivals cannot easily replicate in Brazil. Its scale gives it significant leverage with equipment suppliers and floating production vessel builders. Its reserve base supports a long runway of production growth.

Investor Outlook

Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. - Petrobras (PBRA) carries a Weiss Rating of B- (Buy). Today's breakout above its prior $20.05 high pairs a shrinking political discount with record earnings, a 6.05% dividend yield and a single-digit forward P/E. Investors should watch the October 25 runoff closely, along with any signals on Petrobras governance, pricing policy and dividend payouts, and further appraisal results from the Equatorial Margin.
