Range Resources Corporation (RRC) Up 15.4% — Should I Lean Into This Breakout?

  • RRC rose 15.38% to $52.52 from $45.52 the previous trading day
  • Weiss Ratings assigns C+ (Hold)
  • Market cap is $10.64B with a dividend yield of 0.86%

Range Resources Corporation (RRC) is surging on Monday, last trading at $52.52 on the NYSE, a $7.00 gain from the prior close of $45.52. The 15.38% jump pushes the stock decisively into new territory. RRC now trades about 8.7% above its previous 52-week high of $48.31, a level set on March 27, 2026, which marks a clean breakout to fresh highs in a single session.

Volume is running at 8,692,129 shares against a 90-day average of 2,869,380, roughly three times normal turnover. Buyers are showing up in force behind today's move.

Why Range Resources Corporation Price is Moving Higher

The driver is unambiguous. EQT agreed to acquire Range in an all-stock deal, and RRC shareholders are being offered a meaningful premium. Under the terms, Range holders will receive 0.987 EQT shares for each RRC share. Reuters calculated that the exchange ratio implied $54.91 per Range share, about 20.6% above Friday's $45.52 close. With RRC changing hands at $52.52, the stock still sits roughly $2.39 below that implied value. Because the consideration is paid in EQT stock, that figure will move with EQT's share price, and the remaining spread reflects the time and approvals still ahead before the deal closes.

The strategic logic is substantial. EQT and Range said the combined company would carry an enterprise value above $50 billion and production above 9 billion cubic feet equivalent per day, which would create a dominant Appalachian gas platform. The companies are targeting $325 million in annual synergies within two years, with a pathway to more than $600 million over the long term. Closing is expected in the first quarter of 2027, subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals.

What makes the move stand out is that it came against the commodity tape. U.S. natural gas fell more than 4% to about $2.52 per MMBtu as warm-weather forecasts weighed on heating-demand expectations, so a commodity rally cannot explain RRC's gain. The broader Energy group offered little help either. BP p.l.c. (BP) slipped 1.33% and SLB N.V. (SLB) dropped 2.16%, while Diamondback Energy, Inc. (FANG) was essentially flat with a 0.04% gain. Range still plans to release Q3 results after the market close, though the previously scheduled October 28 earnings call has been canceled following the merger announcement. That leaves the deal as the story investors will trade on from here.

What is the Range Resources Corporation Rating - Should I Buy?

Weiss Ratings assigns RRC a C+ rating. Current recommendation is Hold. A C+ sits at the upper end of the Hold range, and the profile behind it shows a business that was operating from strength well before EQT came calling.

The Excellent rating on the Efficiency Index stands out most. Range is generating a 19.47% return on equity and a 26.30% profit margin, and it is doing so while natural gas trades near $2.52 per MMBtu. That is a demanding price environment for a gas-weighted producer, and the returns point to a low-cost Marcellus asset base that keeps producing profits when the commodity backdrop softens. The Good rating on the Solvency Index adds to that picture, indicating a balance sheet in sound shape. That strength helps explain why Range was an attractive acquisition target rather than a distressed one. The Total Return Index is also rated Good. Holders have been rewarded over the measurement period, and today's breakout above the $48.31 high only extends that record.

Where the picture becomes more nuanced is on the Growth Index, rated Weak. Revenue growth of 8.62% is respectable in absolute terms, but for a producer whose top line rises and falls with gas prices, it does not signal the kind of durable expansion this dimension rewards. The Volatility Index is rated Fair. A 15.38% single-day jump driven by the EQT deal is welcome news for holders, but it is still the kind of outsized swing that keeps this rating from moving higher. The Dividend Index is also rated Fair, consistent with a 0.86% yield that is modest by Energy sector standards. These middling ratings are what hold the overall grade at C+ rather than lifting it into Buy territory. A forward P/E of 12.57 on EPS of $3.62 suggests the valuation was not stretched going into the deal.

Within the Energy sector, Range Resources alongside BP p.l.c. (BP, C+) and Diamondback Energy, Inc. (FANG, C+). It ranks a notch above SLB N.V. (SLB, C), Woodside Energy Group Ltd (WDS, C), and China Shenhua Energy Company Limited (CUAEF, C). Range is among the better-rated names in its peer set, and it now carries a defined takeout value as well.

About Range Resources Corporation

Range Resources Corporation (RRC) is an independent Energy company focused on the exploration, development, and production of natural gas, natural gas liquids, and crude oil and condensate. Headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, Range is best known as a pioneer of the Marcellus Shale in the Appalachian Basin, where it concentrates its operations in southwestern Pennsylvania. Its production is heavily weighted toward natural gas, with a significant natural gas liquids stream of ethane, propane, and butane that diversifies revenue beyond dry gas.

Range's competitive edge comes from the scale and depth of its Appalachian acreage. Years of development have given the company a large inventory of drilling locations and an operating footprint that supports efficient, repeatable well results. Its access to takeaway capacity, including routes that move natural gas liquids to export markets, lets Range reach buyers well beyond its home basin. That matters in a region where pipeline constraints have historically weighed on local pricing.

This combination of low-cost resource, liquids exposure, and established infrastructure positions Range as a core supplier to domestic utilities, industrial users, and global liquids markets. It is the same asset base that made the company a natural fit for EQT's plan to build the largest natural gas platform in the United States.

Investor Outlook

With the EQT deal now setting the stock's direction, investors should track the spread between RRC and the implied value of 0.987 EQT shares, along with progress on regulatory and shareholder approvals ahead of the expected Q1 2027 close. Tonight's Q3 results will offer a final standalone look at the business EQT is paying up to acquire. See full rankings of all C+ rated Energy stocks inside the Weiss Stock Screener.
