Suncor Energy Inc. (SU) Down 5.5% — Time to Close Shop on This One?

  • SU fell 5.47% to $71.32 from $75.45 the previous trading day
  • Weiss Ratings assigns A- (Buy)
  • Market cap is $88.25B with a dividend yield of 2.30%

Suncor Energy Inc. (SU) is under heavy pressure in today's session, currently changing hands at $71.32 on the NYSE. That is a $4.13 decline from the prior close of $75.45 and erases a large share of the stock's recent gains. The pullback leaves SU about 11.1% below its 52-week high of $80.25, a level it reached on October 22, 2026, less than two weeks ago. A stock that was pressing record territory in late October has now given back a meaningful portion of that advance in a single session.

Volume stands at roughly 3.33 million shares so far, compared with a 90-day average of about 4.12 million. Turnover is running about 19% below normal with the session still open, so the decline is happening on lighter-than-average participation.

Why Suncor Energy Inc. Price is Moving Lower

The selling is coming from the oil market, not from Suncor's own results. WTI crude was reported down $7.57 to $88.52 a barrel on November 4. Investors were reassessing the price premium tied to the Iran war after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the U.S. midterm elections. Uncertainty over whether Washington might now pursue diplomacy or further military action prompted traders to strip risk out of crude. Energy equities followed. In Toronto, the TSX energy group fell 5.9% even as the broader TSX rose 2%, and Suncor's Canadian-listed shares were down C$5.33, or 5%, to C$100.10 at midday.

The damage is spread across the Energy sector, and SU is moving in line with it. ConocoPhillips (COP) is down 5.70%, nearly matching Suncor's decline. Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) has dropped 9.93%, a sign that refining-heavy names are also being hit as investors price in a lower crude environment. When producers, integrateds, and refiners all fall together by this much, the driver is the commodity itself.

The sector move is overwhelming one of Suncor's strongest quarters. Q3 results released on November 3 showed adjusted EPS of $2.84 against a $2.25 consensus estimate, and revenue of $13.49 billion against an expected $11.26 billion. In Canadian-dollar terms, adjusted operating earnings reached C$4.631 billion, up from C$1.794 billion a year earlier, driven by higher oil realizations and stronger refining margins. Management kept its 2026 guidance unchanged and raised planned monthly share buybacks to C$750 million. Those figures show the business performing well. The catch is that much of the quarter's strength came from elevated crude prices, which is exactly the variable the market is now questioning.

What is the Suncor Energy Inc. Rating - Should I Sell?

Weiss Ratings assigns SU a A- rating. Current recommendation is Buy. One bad day for crude does not undo the fundamental profile behind that rating. Still, today's decline is a reminder that the rating rests on a business whose earnings move with commodity prices.

Suncor is rated Excellent on four of its six sub-indices. The Excellent Growth Index rating reflects revenue growth of 45.85%, an exceptional pace for an integrated producer of this size. The third quarter's jump in adjusted operating earnings to C$4.631 billion supports that rating. The Excellent Efficiency Index rating is backed by a 19.40% ROE and a 15.77% profit margin, which are strong returns for a company that has to fund capital-heavy oil sands mining and refining operations. On the Solvency Index, the Excellent rating fits a company confident enough in its cash generation to lift monthly buybacks to C$750 million while holding guidance steady. The Excellent Total Return Index rating reflects the run that carried the stock to $80.25 in late October. Even after today's drop, the forward P/E of 13.92 does not suggest a stock priced for perfection.

The picture becomes more nuanced on the Volatility Index and the Dividend Index, both rated Good. Today's decline shows why volatility is not rated higher. A single session of falling crude, triggered by a political event in Washington, took more than 5% off the share price even though the company had just beaten estimates. The Good Dividend Index rating fits a 2.30% yield that is solid but not standout for the Energy sector. Suncor appears to favor returning capital through aggressive buybacks rather than a higher payout.

Within the Energy sector, Suncor ranks ahead of every peer in its group. It sits above Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC, B+) and well ahead of ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation (XOM, B), and Chevron Corporation (CVX, B), both of which held up somewhat better today at -4.80% and -3.93% respectively. ConocoPhillips (COP, B-) trails further back. All of these names are exposed to the same crude-price risk, so Suncor's stronger rating offers relative strength rather than protection.

About Suncor Energy Inc.

Suncor Energy Inc. (SU) is an integrated company in the Energy sector, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. Its operations span the full chain from resource extraction to the retail pump. The core of the business is the Athabasca oil sands, where Suncor runs mining and upgrading operations at its Base Plant and Fort Hills assets. It also holds a significant interest in Syncrude and produces bitumen through in situ operations such as Firebag. Beyond the oil sands, the company has offshore exploration and production interests off Canada's East Coast, including stakes in the Hibernia, Hebron, and White Rose fields.

Downstream, Suncor operates a refining and marketing business with refineries in Edmonton, Montreal, Sarnia, and Commerce City, Colorado. It processes a large share of its own upstream production into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other refined products. Those products reach customers through the Petro-Canada brand, one of Canada's most recognized fuel retailers, which has an extensive national network of retail stations and wholesale and commercial fuel channels.

That integration is Suncor's main competitive advantage. Owning both long-life oil sands reserves and the refining capacity to upgrade them lets the company capture margin at several points in the value chain, and refining earnings can partly offset weakness in upstream pricing. The long reserve life of its oil sands assets also gives Suncor a production base that does not require the constant replacement drilling conventional producers depend on. However, the company remains exposed to swings in crude benchmarks, heavy-oil differentials, and refining spreads.

Investor Outlook

Suncor Energy Inc. (SU) carries a Weiss Rating of A- (Buy) on the strength of excellent growth, efficiency, solvency, and total return ratings. Today's drop shows how quickly a shift in the geopolitical premium on crude can override strong quarterly results. Investors should watch where WTI settles relative to the $88.52 level as Washington's post-midterm policy toward Iran becomes clearer, and whether Suncor keeps its C$750 million monthly buyback pace if oil prices keep falling.
