Company Overview
Sears Canada Inc. (formerly TSX: SCC; OTC: SRSCQ) was a Canadian department store and retail services company that operated as one of Canada’s largest broadline retailers prior to its liquidation. The company sold apparel, appliances, home furnishings, tools, electronics, jewelry, cosmetics, and general merchandise through department stores, catalog operations, e-commerce platforms, and specialty retail formats. Its primary revenue drivers historically came from retail merchandise sales, private-label brands, appliance distribution, and credit-related retail services tied to its customer loyalty ecosystem.
The company originated in 1952 as Simpson-Sears Ltd., a joint venture between Canada’s Robert Simpson Company and U.S.-based Sears, Roebuck and Co. Over time, it evolved into a national retail chain with extensive mall-based department stores and distribution infrastructure across Canada. Following ownership changes involving Kmart, ESL Investments, and later Sears Holdings, the company struggled with declining traffic, increased competition from discount retailers and e-commerce platforms, and weakening financial performance. Sears Canada filed for creditor protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) in 2017 and subsequently entered liquidation proceedings, with remaining operations wound down by early 2018.
