XP Inc. (XP) Down 4.5% — Time to Unwind the Position?
XP Inc. (XP) is retreatingt in today's session, last trading at $29.04 on the NASDAQ, a $1.38 decline from the prior close of $30.42. The pullback leaves the stock roughly 11.3% below its 52-week high of $32.73, set on October 12, 2026, just ten sessions ago. That makes the speed of the reversal notable. XP was pressing new highs less than two weeks ago, and it has now given back a meaningful share of that advance.
Volume stands at approximately 7.77 million shares, compared with a 90-day average of about 7.21 million. That is roughly 8% above normal with the session still open, so trading is active but not extreme.
Why XP Inc. Price is Moving Lower
The most plausible driver is profit-taking and risk reduction ahead of Brazil's October 25 presidential runoff, following a steep election-driven rally. According to Valor, XP had climbed 41.5% since October 5 and 88% year to date as of October 22. The same report described investors shifting toward downside protection as polls narrowed the race. A stock that has nearly doubled in ten months and added more than 40% in under three weeks is exposed to exactly this kind of pre-event de-risking. With the runoff three days away, holders have clear reason to lock in gains rather than carry binary political risk into the weekend.
The broader Brazilian options market shows the same defensive turn. Ibovespa data from October 20 showed open interest in puts rising to 63.1 million contracts from 45 million on October 2. Over the same period, call open interest fell to 64 million from 92 million. XP-specific put purchases reached 23,738 on October 22, 11% above the daily average. The weakness also extends to U.S.-listed brokerage names: Robinhood Markets, Inc. (HOOD) is down 5.77% today, and The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (GS) has slipped 1.91%.
Analyst commentary had already flagged how much was priced in. On October 20, Bank of America raised its price target on XP to $33 from $21 but kept a Neutral rating. The bank noted that the shares had re-rated sharply and that further gains depend on sustained earnings growth. The fundamentals coming into the rally were solid but not spectacular. XP's Q2 results, reported on August 17, showed EPS of $0.53 against a $0.50 estimate and revenue of $943.55 million versus the $935.15 million consensus, up 8.3% year over year. That is a clean beat. Single-digit top-line growth, however, leaves little room for error once a stock has run 88% in a year on macro and political expectations.
What is the XP Inc. Rating - Should I Sell?
Weiss Ratings assigns XP a C rating. Current recommendation is Hold. The rating reflects a company with a sound financial foundation and solid profitability, offset by a share price that has become heavily tied to Brazilian politics and macro sentiment. A C rating does not signal a sell. It does indicate that the risk/reward balance calls for patience rather than aggressive accumulation after an extended run.
XP's strongest dimensions are on the balance sheet and in profitability. The Excellent rating on the Solvency Index matters for a broker and bank operating in an emerging market where interest rates and currency swings can strain weaker players. It suggests XP has the capital cushion to absorb a volatile post-election environment. The Good rating on the Efficiency Index is supported by a 22.65% ROE and a 28.55% profit margin. Those are strong returns for a platform that relies on a large network of independent advisors and has spent heavily to expand into banking and credit. At a forward P/E of 15.87 on trailing EPS of $1.92, the market is paying a reasonable but no longer discounted multiple for that profitability.
The picture becomes more nuanced on growth and returns. XP is rated Fair on the Growth Index. Revenue growth of 24.07% on Weiss's measure is respectable, but the most recent quarter's 8.3% year-over-year revenue gain points to a slower current pace, which explains why the rating does not reach higher. The Fair rating on the Total Return Index indicates that, despite this year's 88% surge, shareholder returns over Weiss's measurement period have been less consistent than the year-to-date figure alone would suggest. The 1.25% dividend yield also adds only modestly to total return. The Weak Volatility Index is the clearest constraint on the overall rating. Today's 4.54% pre-runoff pullback comes immediately after a 41.5% surge in less than three weeks, and swings of that size show how sensitive the stock has become to the election outcome.
Within the Financials sector, XP sits alongside S&P Global Inc. (SPGI, C), Robinhood Markets, Inc. (HOOD, C), and Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRKA, C). It trails The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (GS, C+) and American Express Company (AXP, C+), both of which carry slightly stronger risk/reward profiles in Weiss's framework.
About XP Inc.
XP Inc. (XP) is a Financials company behind one of Brazil's largest technology-driven investment and financial services platforms. Founded in 2001 in Porto Alegre and now based in São Paulo, XP started as an investment advisory and brokerage business. It has since grown into a broad financial ecosystem serving retail, high-net-worth, corporate, and institutional clients. Its consumer-facing brands include XP Investimentos, Rico, and Clear, which give Brazilian investors access to equities, fixed income, investment funds, derivatives, and structured products.
Beyond brokerage, XP has moved into higher-value adjacent businesses. XP Asset Management runs funds across multiple asset classes. The company's banking operations offer credit cards, lending, insurance, and retirement products. XP also serves companies through investment banking, debt capital markets, and institutional brokerage. This mix gives the company several revenue streams beyond trading commissions, although activity levels across the platform remain closely linked to the health of Brazil's capital markets.
XP's main competitive advantage is its distribution model. A large network of independent financial advisors, combined with digital platforms, has let the company capture market share from Brazil's traditional incumbent banks, which historically controlled most household savings. Brand recognition, scale in fixed income and fund distribution, and a product shelf wider than most rivals offer help strengthen client relationships. Competition from incumbent banks and digital challengers, however, continues to pressure fees.
Investor Outlook
XP Inc. (XP) carries a Weiss Rating of C (Hold), and today's pullback shows how much of the recent rally rests on Brazil's political outlook rather than near-term earnings. Investors should watch the October 25 runoff result and how Brazilian assets reprice afterward. They should also watch whether XP's next quarterly report shows revenue growth accelerating beyond the 8.3% pace of the second quarter, as Bank of America's view suggests further upside requires.
