Give Your Bitcoin a Tax Break

Give Your Bitcoin a Tax Break

You may own Bitcoin (BTC). You may have an IRA.

But did you know you can put the two together?

It's true.

You can now hold Bitcoin and other forms of crypto in some retirement accounts. And that could open a new door for your savings.

Think of it this way …

If you’re long-term bullish on Bitcoin, you’ll be holding your tokens for long haul. Not just for the next big rally. But for five, 10 or even 20 years.

The typical approach would be to store those coins in a hardware wallet. But a crypto IRA lets you hold for years … while also benefitting from the same tax perks that come with a regular IRA.

So, let's look at how they work, what you stand to gain and how to find one that fits your needs.

What Is a Crypto IRA?

First, IRA stands for individual retirement account. These financial tools give you a way to save and invest for the day you stop working.

Most IRAs hold stocks, bonds or funds. But a crypto IRA adds a new choice: digital assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.

And like other IRAs, it comes in two main forms.

A traditional IRA may let you put money in before you pay income tax on it. Your savings can then grow without a yearly tax bill. You pay tax (based on your income) when you take money out.

A Roth IRA works the other way. You put in money you've already paid tax on. Then, so long as you follow the rules, you can take out your gains tax-free in retirement.

That's a big deal if your crypto rises in value over time.

You can open a new crypto IRA. Or, in many cases, move funds from an IRA you already own.

What you can’t do is just send Bitcoin from your own wallet into the account. In most cases, you must add cash, then buy your crypto through the IRA.

That’s for regulation compliance.

And the same IRA rules still apply in a crypto account as a regular one. That means limits on how much you can add each year and rules on when you can take money out.

The Good News … and the Risks

The main draw of these accounts is clear …

You get a shot at crypto gains with IRA tax perks.

In a regular crypto account, a sale at a profit can lead to a tax bill. In an IRA, trades made within the account do not lead to that same yearly tax bill.

And that can help you keep more of your funds at work for longer.

It can also help diversify your retirement strategy. Especially when crypto outperforms the TradFi market.

But there’s another side to that coin. One every crypto investor knows well: Crypto can lose a lot of value. Fast.

Bitcoin has seen huge gains. But it has also seen steep drops. Altcoins can be even more risky. That matters when the money is meant to fund your life after work.

Then there are fees.

Some firms charge when you buy or sell. Others charge fees each month or year.

Those costs can eat into your gains. And if you sell crypto at a loss inside an IRA, you can't use that loss to cut your tax bill the way you may be able to in a regular account.

So, the tax perks are real.

But they don't make crypto investing less risky. That’s a balance you’ll need to watch closely.

Which Crypto IRA Fits Your Needs?

The good news is that you have more than one choice.

Fidelity: A Familiar Name

Fidelity now offers a crypto IRA for people who want to hold digital assets in a retirement account.

Its big draw is the chance to use a well-known firm for both crypto and more common forms of investing.

That may appeal to those who want a simple way to add crypto to a long-term plan.

But be sure to check which coins you can buy and what each trade will cost. Fidelity’s list of supported coins is limited and could vary by state.

Swan Bitcoin: Keep It Simple

Swan takes a very narrow path. It focuses on Bitcoin alone.

That may suit people who want to buy Bitcoin over time and hold it for years … but don’t want to deal with following the altcoin market, as well.

Or the increased volatility altcoins can bring.

According to CoinLedger, Swan charges no fees on the first $10,000 of Bitcoin buys. Though it does add them for any additional trades after that.

iTrustCapital: A Focus on Low Fees

iTrustCapital also boasts low fees — no monthly account fee and only a 1% charge on crypto trades.

And it’s built for savers who want crypto to be a larger part of their retirement strategy. It offers more than 40 coins, plus gold and silver.

That could suit those who want to buy and hold for years.

But just take note that even a 1% fee can add up if you trade a lot.

AltoIRA: More Coins to Choose From

This one is for the dedicated crypto HODLer. And someone who wants a very diversified retirement strategy.

AltoIRA lists more than 200 coins on its platform. It also offers access to other types of assets, such as real estate and art.

Plus, it has more fees than iTrustCapital — account fees and fees for each crypto trade.

Rocket Dollar: More Than Crypto

Rocket Dollar is for people who want to take a hands-on role in their IRA.

It offers access to crypto and other assets, such as real estate and startup firms. That means more choice.

It also means more risk, more rules, monthly fees and overall more work on your part to make sure it runs smoothly.

This is a good option if you already know how to trade, what you want to own, and can manage your portfolio without help.

As you can see, each plan has its own strengths and its own considerations. So be sure to do your own research to find the right fit for your strategy.

The Best First Step

So, should you open a crypto IRA?

That comes down to your goals and investment strategy.

If you believe in crypto for the long run, an IRA may be a smart way to gain exposure while using tax breaks.

But don't pick a plan based on coin count or low fees alone.

Ask who holds your crypto. Check how it is kept safe. And find out what it costs to buy, sell or close your account.

Then think about how much risk you can take and how much direct control you want. Your retirement fund should help you sleep well at night. Not keep you glued to a price chart.

The goal isn't to bet your future on crypto.

It's to see if crypto has a place in the future you're building.

To your wealth,
