Tech Terror Is Good News for Gold

Tech Terror Is Good News for Gold

Did you see last week’s scare in the corporate bond market — and the rush into Treasurys? There could be a lot more to come.

What interested me was the surprising beneficiary: gold!

Last week, we saw a sudden, brutal repricing in AI infrastructure debt.

It ignited when yields on CoreWeave (CRWV) bonds surged into distressed territory near 15% to 16%.

CoreWeave is a neocloud, a company that builds data centers and rents out the capacity to AI companies.

I talked about it and other tech stocks that got beaten like a bunch of rented mules, giving you a list of companies you might want to avoid.

You can find my analysis in this column.

The effects dominoed through the market, giving a textbook demonstration of how credit contagion ripples into sovereign debt, fiat currency and hard assets.

The Flight to Quality: Corporate Credit to Treasurys

The sell-off in debt issued by data center operators and high-capex AI plays exposed growing skepticism around debt-funded compute capacity.

As investors dumped corporate paper to avoid refinancing and credit-default risks, institutional allocators executed a classic flight to safety.

That flight sent capital rushing into U.S. government paper.

Because bond prices and yields move inversely, aggressive buying across Treasury benchmarks pushed yields lower.

The 10-Year Treasury yield fell sharply. At the same time, lower bond yields dragged down the high-flying U.S. dollar.

And guess what sits on the other end of the seesaw with the dollar? Gold!

Why Gold Accelerated

Gold trades inversely to real yields and the U.S. dollar.

Because physical gold yields 0%, falling yields on Treasurys compress the yield advantage of holding paper debt over tangible assets.

As private debt concerns spread across corporate balance sheets, gold acted as the ultimate form of sovereign, counterparty-free collateral, rising as yields fell.

After attempting to hold positive relative territory earlier in the period, the 10-year yield broke down significantly, slip-sliding down 2.59%.

Meanwhile, gold began an upward reversal before settling down on Friday.

The Outlook Beyond the Bounce

That brings us to this week, which started with a bounce across select AI names and equity benchmarks, reflecting short-term positioning relief following analyst defenses and backlog reassurances.

Yet the structural issue — an enormous debt stack requiring continuous, cheap refinancing in an elevated interest-rate environment — remains unresolved.

If private credit spreads continue widening and institutional investors continue demanding double-digit risk premiums to finance GPU buildouts, we’re gonna see a whole lot more of what we saw last week.

So, you might want to add a little gold to your portfolio on pullbacks.

An easy way to do that is the SPDR Gold MiniShares Trust (GLDM).

It owns physical gold and is designed to track bullion prices at lower expense.

Gold and the GLDM look cheap now.

If the crisis in tech bonds continues, the yellow metal could get a lot more expensive.

All the best,

Sean Brodrick

P.S. This short-term panic over CoreWeave debt could be just the start of something Dr. Martin Weiss and Nilus Mattive have been researching for months.

The AI financing problems could end up being worse than the subprime crisis nearly two decades ago. Fortunately, beyond gold, they have other remedies for you to take now.
