Well, you don’t have to be a seasoned investor to know what goes up in the market must eventually come down, which was the case on Friday.
Indeed, S&P 500 futures declined after yet another hot inflation report fueled fears that Fed rate cuts may arrive later than expected this year.
January’s producer price index, which measures wholesale inflation, came in with a 0.3% increase. Excluding food and energy, core PPI increased 0.5%, higher than the expectations for a 0.1% gain.

Investors have been laser-focused on the direction of the U.S. economy and when Powell & Co. may decide to lower rates, especially following this week’s hotter-than-expected consumer price index data. Friday’s wholesale inflation report just piles on concerns that the Fed may wait until later in the year before it starts cutting rates.
Though, it’s not all concerning news. In fact, the S&P 500 closed at a fresh record high Thursday, while the Dow and Nasdaq also posted gains in the previous session.
Plus, Wall Street’s AI darling Nvidia (NVDA) stayed higher on Friday as it got another super-bullish call from a Street analyst, with Loop Capital saying it was set to eventually top $1,200.
